Montana Pioneers Dissolved After Long History
The Society of Montana Pioneers founded in Helena on Sept. 11, 1884, has dissolved with eight surviving members aged 95 on average. Lumen W. Allen, 94, Harrison, was present and agreed the current meeting would be the last. Remaining survivors include Lucia Idaho Buckingham, Helen Allen Coward, the Rev. Samuel Fletcher, Anthony H. French, Josephine Gilg, Arthur P. Moran, and Frank Nelson with ties to Bannack, Dillon, Missoula, and Townsend.

Pioneers Leaders Open 68th Montana Convention
Nearly 100 members of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers gathered for the 68th annual convention opening Friday morning at the Finlen Hotel. President William T. J. Mannix presided with Roy M. Crismas as society secretary and Lumen W. Allen expected to attend. A welcome address was given by Maurice Hennessey on behalf of Mayor Vern Griffith. Allen received a standing ovation at the afternoon session.

Three Montana Prison Escapees Captured in Chehalis
Three trusties from Montana State Prison Harley Lodahl Robert Lerck and Alvin LaMere were captured in Chehalis after a home burglary and a stolen car pursuit. They had earlier burgled a store and fled a prison ranch with a guard present.

Truck driver killed in one car crash near Dillon
A 25 year old truck driver from Ogden Utah Jerry Hamblen died of head injuries when his 1956 convertible rolled seven or eight times on State Highway 287 near Badger Pass about 5 30 am Friday. Melrose teen Mildred Jones 16 was hospitalized with a fractured ankle and hand but listed in satisfactory condition.

150 to Be Laid Off at Anaconda Smelter
The Butte Teamsters Local No. 2 strike against Anaconda Co. leads to 150 layoffs at the Anaconda smelter this weekend. Company officials say about 600 in Anaconda and 600 in Butte are idled due to the stoppage, with ore supply depleted and one furnace and two converters in operation after the curtailment.

Truck Overturns Near Butte Kills Sixteen Cattle
A truck crash on a U S Highway 10 bypass near Butte killed sixteen Black Angus cattle and left two occupants, driver Dennis J. Drotzman and another, alive. Drotzman, 30, Yankton, S D, was hospitalized. a steer survived briefly before a train ended it. A charge of driving in other than a careful and prudent manner was filed.
