Deserters fail Ford clemency plan as most drop out

The Selective Service reports two thirds of deserters in Ford’s clemency program did not complete work assignments, with 2,035 terminated for non performance and 1,000 never reporting. About 7,000 deserters did not seek entry. Many can’t be punished if apprehended.

Lightning Strikes Campground Injuring Near 100

In Leslie Michigan bolts of lightning hit Wheel Inn campground during a National Campers and Hikers Association gathering injuring about 100 people. Police said ~30 treated and released at Jackson area hospitals while others were treated locally. Doctors credited rubber-soled shoes for potential lives saved.

Gallatin steam threshing bee revived near Belgrade

Lance Barnes and family hosted a pre world war I era threshing bee west of Belgrade featuring steamers, a 1910 Case tractor, sawmill, water wagon and traction engineers Virginia Barnes and the Shadoans. Visitors can watch steamers fire and thresh, with weather permitting Sunday finish expected.

IRS probes illegal use of tax returns

Washington AP reports the Internal Revenue Service is conducting an intensive investigation into CIA access to individual federal income tax returns. The probe follows the Rockefeller Commission finding that 14 incidents affected 16 people, with the CIA seeking information for possible foreign group links.

Young Demos vote for Bayh at national convention

Delegates at the Young Democrats of America convention in St. Louis chose Sen. Birch Bayh as their top candidate for the 1976 Democratic nomination.
