Butte Man Among Three New Auto Fatalities

A 36 year old Butte man, Leslie R. Kauppala, died from chest injuries after his car missed a detour near Philipsburg and crashed. The Granite County sheriff said Kauppala was alone, the vehicle leaped a ditch, and it did not overturn. The toll rose to 148 statewide that year.

Eight Prisoners Die as Fire Destroys New Jersey Jail

In Ocean County New Jersey a fire and explosion at the two story overcrowded jail killed eight prisoners and injured 12. One victim faced 90 days for disorderly conduct and others awaiting charges in rape murder larceny forgery. John Price 22 a former Park County High School basketball star died in a Livingston hospital from a self inflicted abdo men gunshot wound. Coroner said he told hospital staff the shooting was accidental and that he did not know the gun was loaded after being found in an alley Saturday morning.
