Army tanks and police pressed down on rioters in Brno with tear gas and gunfire reported. Seven people said killed, 19 wounded, as authorities enforced an 8 pm to 5 am curfew after clashes between protesters and security forces. Separate dispatch notes hundreds of thousands uprooted by floodwaters in Oaxaca from Hurricane Camille.
Washington AP secretary of the navy John H. Chafee announced that two of six antisubmarine warfare carriers will be among 100 ships to be deactivated this year as part of a planned 3 billion Pentagon cut. The measure cuts 72,000 sailors and saves about 100 million, with 76 ships named so far and 24 more to be identified later.
Everett V. Darlinton, director of the Montana Water Resources Board, resigns effective Sept. 12 after two years in the job. Gov. Forrest H. Anderson notes Darlinton cites mounting burdens and says no reflection on state administration. Darlinton, a Bozeman native, is MSU 1941 industrial engineer.
Deer Lodge County investigators labeled the Thursday night blast at Perkins trailer home a professional bomb. Perkins, 60, died when a fragment pierced his heart as his car exploded in a garage adjoining the residence. The 1968 Chevrolet bore the device. coroner and sheriff sought federal aid while detailing the extensive damage to the garage and trailer.
The United States announced talks with Thailand on a gradual reduction of the 48 000 U S troops and airmen stationed there. Officials emphasized the plan remains in existence though on the shelf, and stressed continued use of Thai bases for B 52 bomber operations in Vietnam.
The Silver Bow County courthouse operates with a reduced crew as staff join daily picketing. Commissioner Earl J. Holman stands alone in the chambers while others are absent or away. County Atty Sullivan and School Supt Hogan offices closed. Sullivan relocated staff to a nearby building. Auditor Murray remains at work directing deputies from home.
Thieves slipped through an unguarded moment at the courthouse lobby stand operated by Mrs. Gertrude V. Hall. About 70 dollars in a money bag plus 20 in a purse were taken, with 22 dollars in checks left worthless. Entry breached past the Teamster picket line. only the east doors bypassed the pickets.
The Interstate Commerce Commission will hold a Washington DC hearing on Northern Pacific Railway plans to discontinue the Mainstreeter passenger train. Montana’s congressional delegation announced the date after field hearings by the ICC, with the main hearing likely to begin the week of September 22.
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird voiced disapproval of a five year old contingency plan for U S troops under Thai command to defend the government from Communist attacks. Oaths will be given at 8 p.m. with Judge W W Lessley presiding Governor Forrest H Anderson and Janet Harrell spoke Saturday features include a joint session and all star games. Officials elected include Keith Harvick Havre secretary of state and Brad Luck Helena superintendent of public instruction among others.
Premier Tran Van Huong relinquishes the post in effect to allow President Nguyen Van Thieu to form a new cabinet from top to bottom. Thieu seeks broad political backing while facing health and political pressures and a slate of rival generals for the premiership.
Weather fair with partial clouds through Sunday and a 92 46 outlook. In Saigon the military triumvirate heads Thieu's regime as he seeks more civilian ministers. U S officials oppose a purely military premier but back a broader civilian base under Thieu. Speculation connects Thieu to a civilian tech expert or a mixed cabinet.
