Allied planes in one of the war's heaviest raids dumped eight tons of bombs on the Japanese airbase at Rabaul New Britain last night. They also raided Lae bases while facing no enemy opposition and all crews returned safely.
At Butte Country Club 116 players from across Montana began the fifth annual pro-amateur tourney. Dick Lyman and Dr. J. J. Kane shared the halfway lead with net 63 as Fred Zemljak and Joe Yerkich trailed close behind. Final 18 holes set for today with tee times starting 7 45 a m.
Dallas August 22 The Texas senatorial contest tightened as incumbent W Lee O Dan iel trailed challenger James V Allred with 124 of 254 counties reported at 9 30 p m Allred led 191 917 votes to 173 671 or 52 50 to 47 50 indicating a close finish as returns continued

Soviet and German forces exchange gains as the Wehrmacht drives toward Stalingrad crossing the Don southeast of Kletskaya and forming a wedge northeast of Kotelnikovski. Russians withdraw in the Caucasus and heavy fighting continues across sectors near the Volga.
Washington Aug 22 Donald M Nelsons war production report shows July gains across sectors. Aircraft up 11 percent from June. combat planes up 6 percent but below expectations. Ordnance up 26 percent, tanks ahead of schedule, anti aircraft guns up over 50 percent. Merchant ships deliveries rose, naval vessels up 22 percent, minor ships still behind forecasts.
War Production Board chair Donald M. Nelson said readjustments are being applied to fix an uneven July in which overall output rose 16 percent but fell 7 percent short of prior goals. He outlined the imbalance in a prepared statement at a press conference.
Navy communique reports U S submarines in Far East and Aleutians sinking two large cargo ships and a large transport, damaging a destroyer and a medium cargo ship. Additional Aleutian area sinking noted with ships sunk or damaged totals.
James W. Uncles of Butte Montana Kiwanis district governor presides as the 22nd convention opens at the Hotel Finlen. The streamlined gathering runs 4 PM today to 5 PM Monday with a noon Monday luncheon for units. A dinner session at 6:30 includes welcomes from Mayor Barry O Leary and Archie Adams.
London August 22 The admiralty reported that the submarine Upholder of 540 tons has been lost. The Upholder carried a normal crew of 27 officers and men.
Montana State Press association concludes its 57th annual meeting in Butte with elections and resolutions. W. F. Flinn of Miles City Star elected president succeeding Charles J. Doherty of Missoula. Havre bids for 1943 convention site. officers named include Frank Whetstone Cut Bank Harold G. Stearns Harlowton Alexander Warden Great Falls John W. Lyman Bozeman Rev Patrick Casey Drummond and Mrs Nellie T Cheely.
A hot August morning finds the 96th Infantry Division marching to a mass gathering near Adair Oregon. Soldiers form in units on a hillside before a speakers’ platform as civilians watch from the outskirts.
Albert H. Fiebach imperial potentate of the Shrine visited Bagdad temple in Butte to boost morale during wartime. The Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine has 300,000 members across North America and runs 15 Shriners hospitals for crippled children with more than 75,000 treated.
A large group of Shriners from Butte and nearby cities met at the Masonic temple to welcome Albert H. Fiebach of Cleveland Ohio during his official visit. The event included a Shrine session in the Red room then a reception, buffet lunch, and remarks urging support for hospitals and wartime efforts.
Brazil formally recognizes a state of belligerency with Germany and Italy in response to Axis attacks that sank five Brazilian ships and caused hundreds of deaths. The move follows widespread demonstrations, with Brazil becoming the first South American nation to admit open war with the Axis. Uruguay and other republics may follow.
The Navy recruiting sub-station at Butte reports 14 enlistments and four approvals as a new campaign gains momentum. D W P Bergsma credits civilian volunteers for steady gains and predicts further record-breaking numbers. Names of applicants sent to Helena for final exams are listed along with ages and parents.
Thirty four of forty three applicants were granted citizenship at a two day naturalization hearing in United States district court. Saturday's session listed names including Jack Markovich Mary Kristina Maki Frances Eltz Catherine Sullivan Aili Lakso Anna Elisabeth Freeman Meimi Maria Erkkila and Helena Catherine McLennan. Some applicants received name changes to Mamie Marie Erkkila and Ernest Pelto.
