Montana banks part of a large Northwest banking group face a regional crisis as a bandit trio eludes pursuit near Virginia City. Fire threats loom in Columbia Falls with water supply possibly cut off as flames spread southward.
A discussion of the Hague conference outcome and the British crisis over the Young report. Philip Snowden and William Graham are highlighted as key figures shaping policy as Britain faces possible deadlock among major powers including Germany, France, and Japan.
After a 12 hour search near Virginia City a shotgun armed Butte police squad led by Chief Jere Murphy found no trace of two men and a woman in white wanted for a bank robbery and auto theft. An airplane aided the chase but sightings were negative. Police suspect the trio may hide in Anaconda.
Four Montana institutions Metals Bank and Trust Butte First National Great Falls Western Montana National Missoula and Midland National Billings join a 33 bank holding group with $341000000 resources led by First National of Minneapolis and St Paul The move aims to expand services while preserving local deposits contacts and bank personnel for customers and staff.
Desperate efforts by thousands of men on multiple fronts struggle to contain fires in western Montana and northern Idaho. The Bald mountain blaze in Idaho and the Half Moon fire near Glacier park were still spreading as lines held on parts of fronts. Reinforcements and horses moved to Girds creek in the Bitter Root Valley. 800 acres burned as flames spread. Lincoln fire in the Blackfoot valley seen as stoppable with lines around it. Wales and Yourname creeks posed a less hopeful threat with continued spread.
In Montgomery Alabama on August 22 a police duo patrolling near downtown were attacked by a maniac. Rex Wright age 38 was killed by a chest bullet and blunt head injury. William Smith age 48 was stunned by blows. Suspect Joseph Dodson Choate 26 admitted the crime and was taken into custody with Wright’s pistol.
Helena Aug 22 Special After 24 hours more bankers joined the $250 million merger of First Bank Stock Corp Thomas A Marlow president of three Montana banks announced by long distance call from St Paul The banks are the National Bank of Montana Montana Trust and Savings Helena and First National Bank of Miles City They add about 10 million to the merger total.
Fire said to be started by neighborhood children destroyed the gallows frame and part of the shaft timber at the Germania mine one half mile west of Butte. More than 500 autos gathered before the fire department was summoned. The mine, part of the James A Murray estate, is 1000 feet deep and largely water filled. operations ceased in 1918 after World War I. Continued on page 9.
The Rev. James Empringham, once national secretary of the Church Temperance Society, requests to be relieved from holy orders after declaring Bishop William T. Manning’s Christianity a lie. He says he lost faith 15 years ago and criticizes the bishop’s divorce stance. Empringham had divorced and remarried and cites health issues from California. He returns to New York to face defamers, with copies sent from California. Continued on Page 8.
Seven large banks form the Montana stock in the First Bank Stock corporation plus three banks owned by T A Marlow of Helena. The Marlow banks add about 10 million dollars, giving Montana aggregate holdings of 56 million dollars.
Minneapolis and St Paul First National banks announce the creation of the First Bank Stock corporation a $250 million holding company. The centralized system will unite 34 Minnesota North and South Dakota and Montana banks with headquarters in the Twin Cities. Montana banks include Metals Bank and Trust Great Falls First National Missoula Western Montana Missoula Midland Billings with $46 million in resources led by Metals Bank and Trust at $23 million.
About 125 new students joined the rolls at Butte High School during yesterday morning’s registration. Principal J. G. Ragsdale and staff were busy finalizing lists as assistants worked through the day. Officials expect total enrollment to rival last year with more arrivals before September 3, possibly setting a new record.
