U S bombers hit Thanh Hoa rail yards and Dong Hoi oil depots amid large fires and explosions. Aircraft damaged North Viet Nam targets on a near record day of raids with 134 missions. An AF4e reconnaissance plane was shot down and one crewman captured, the other missing. Australian troops also reported heavy casualties in operation Smithfield near Saigon. Viet Cong attacks spiked across South Viet Nam as Ky vowed to crush saboteurs ahead of the September elections.

A father Charles A Richardson 58 and daughter Frances Lee Richardson 21 from Astoria Oregon drowned when their car swerved off the road between St Regis and Paradise and fell into the Clark Fork River near Cascade Campground. Jack Hermiston of Paradise recovered Frances, Richardson's body recovered later. Family en route to Kalispell to visit a relative. Bodies taken to Shrider Funeral Home in Plains.
