Northeastern Montana farmers assessed heavy damage from a tornado that razed buildings and damaged grain over a two by five mile area near Whitetail on Wednesday night. Orville Federhorn reported about half the grain along the path destroyed as rain and hail followed the storm. no injuries were reported.
Lyle F. Watts the nations chief forester arrived in Butte for an overnight stay with Regional Forester P. D. Hanson and others from Missoula. The group met Deer Lodge supervisor W. E. Fry and planned stops in Ennis Bozeman Livingston Red Lodge and Billings to attend land hearings and discuss regional forest plans.
Washington August 21 A new era for labor management relations began as the Taft Hartley act took effect at midnight The National Labor Relations Board announced a strict policy on pending cases The Chamber of Commerce praised the act as a slave labor law while the A F L and CIO remained silent The Communications Workers of America and the Machinists union registered under the act and swore they are not Communist aligned The Wagner act of 1935 ends with Thursdays close continuing on page 7 column 5
MISSOULA Aug 21 Montana State University held its first formal summer commencement program. Twenty eight graduates received master’s degrees and sixty four earned bachelor’s degrees. Vice President R H Jesse and Dean W P Clark awarded the degrees while President James A McCain gave the commencement address on Key Stones of Professional Success. The class was the largest in summer school history.
Alexander von Der Luft a 23 year old ex Army sergeant and Princeton student, was placed on four years probation after pleading guilty to stealing more than 200 atom bomb papers from the Los Alamos project. FBI testimony said the documents would reveal bomb weight, dimensions, and counts, posing great risk to national security. Judge Gibson leniently cited Lufts youth and cooperation with the FBI.
The United States proposed an addendum to the inter American defense treaty allowing Canada to join if desired. The plan would bind 16 of 20 republics across nearly 15 million square miles from the Arctic to Drake Passage, with a veto mechanism and UN Charter conformity. MARSHALL announced revisions as Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and others pushed for an economic conference later in 1948.
President Truman announced recess designations naming W Stuart Symington as first secretary of the separate Air Force department and Royall as Army secretary. John L Sullivan becomes Navy secretary, succeeding Forrestal who leads the unified Defense. Appointments to cabinet posts take effect mid September amid future confirmations and further high level choices.
Detroit August 22 Ford Motor Company spokesman said at 12 35 a m that an agreement had been reached with the C I O United Auto Workers. Details were not immediately announced.
Slick Airways reports a C-46 freighter with 10,142 pounds of cargo overdue on a Detroit to Burbank flight. Crew includes Capt. Marvin G. Vaughan and First Officer Robert Humes, with aviation writer Herbert Preeg aboard. Search planes from March Field and Ogden joined the effort as the aircraft was last reported near Bryce Canyon during stormy conditions. The NC-59488 left Denver at 3:50 a.m. MST.
Denver August 21 representatives from 10 states and five federal agencies urged unbroken Missouri river project construction to create a self-sufficient basin empire. Brig Gen Pick said Congress aims to flood control, irrigation of five million acres, and power, with 110 dams planned. Meehan urged governors to merchandise resources and attract industry to the basin. Colorado Governor Knous called the cooperation a first step toward broader interstate collaboration.
In Columbus on August 21 six people were hospitalized after lightning struck the Broad street bridge over the Scioto river. Four injured were pulled from the river, others onto the bridge. a 100-foot railing segment and pavement were swept away into the river. Fire crews searched for missing persons as traffic was halted and a crane cleared debris.
Rocky Mountain Garden club opens its annual flower show in the Finlen hotel's Gold room Friday. Nearly 100 entries are filed with more expected. flowers must be brought in by 11 a.m. Opening at 2 p.m. the show runs until 10 p.m. View dozens of blossoms, arrangements, house plants, and novelties. Judges award first and second in six divisions. Arrangements directed by Mrs. Fred Rosselet with a volunteer committee guiding the event. Representatives from club branches will host and provide music and features during show hours.
In Jacksonville Florida estranged husband Robert Eugene Lewis 25 forced wife Jewell Ledford Lewis 25 to a bed during the night torturing and carving his initials into her body words marked by punishing violence. The attack left belt buckle marks and carved initials in both spouses as police investigate.
Mrs. Fred Schultz 26 and her three year old daughter Susan survived an explosion a fire and a crash landing after a coal stove exploded at a ranch cook house near Birney. Both were in serious condition and treated by a doctor at a ranch before being airlifted to Miles City. The private plane piloted by Clyde Maddison crash landed at Miles City airport with no injuries.
A Moscow note protested the London conference on Germany production while Washington said the talks would proceed. The State department criticized Russia for denying Dairen’s return to China and blocking international trade. Other items include Japan peace talks seeking two thirds votes and Austrian treaty delays in Vienna. President Truman weighed a possible special session if foreign policy issues require action.
Fears for the life of golden-haired 20 month old Carolyn Jeannette Peterson grew as her father and Marion county officials ruled she was kidnaped. She vanished from her Waldo area home after her mother left her in the yard to play with her brother. Deputies neighbors and three Marion planes searched field and woods and streams without success.
Partly cloudy to cloudy Friday with thunderstorms possible. Temps remain steady with highs near 75 to 85 in the west and up to 95 in the southeast, including Butte area readings around 76 last 24 hours high 77. Precipitation minimal to scattered showers expected, with localized activity west of the divide.
Britain proceeded with a private three‑power talks in London to set a higher industrial ceiling for western Germany despite Soviet protests that such talks violate the 1945 Potsdam accord. Washington and London argued the discussions cover only British and American zones. Marshall proposed the meetings after French objections to plans to raise German steel output from 5.8 million to about 11–12 million tons annually.
Argentina seeks to abolish the United Nations veto by proposing a General Assembly conference after its upcoming session. The move follows Russia blocking Italy and Austria, with Syria’s El Khoury calling the veto an obstruction.
