Japanese and Chinese forces clash in Shanghai with night long artillery, machine gun, and tank fire. Chinese troops breach lines along the Whangpoo, while a Japanese air armada bombards Pootung and Chapei. The Japanese flagship Idzumo targeted with large shells as the battle continues at dawn.
Congress adjourned amid a split in the Democratic Party after eight months of wrangling. Four lawmakers opposed the Roosevelt Court bill and pressed to oust Guffey from the Senate campaign post. Barkley noted Guffey’s resignation had been offered and postponed. The day closed with a note of defiance as leadership and party cohesion frayed.
The United States Navy began an investigation into the shelling of the cruiser Augusta after a deadly hit near Shanghai. The attack killed one American sailor and wounded 17 as the Augusta lay in the Whangpoo river. The Chinese government and US ambassador weighed in, with the origin of the shell still unclear.
An Asturian Marxist brigade using dynamite bombs trench knives and bare fists reportedly routed a strong Italian Black Arrows column at San Pedro de Romero near Santander. Dozens of Italians were said killed as loyalists claimed the attack stalled General Franco.
Nellie McMahon of 805 Sixth Street was struck while crossing East Fourth Street near the 300 block by a car driven by Coley Mullen and sustained serious head injuries. Mullen, 411 West Third Street, said he was blinded by oncoming lights and was released on his own recognizance. Mrs. McMahon was taken to St. Ann's hospital. doctors described her condition as extremely low and pending x rays.
Forest service officials rushed 600 CCC men from four northern Wyoming camps to fight a spreading forest fire in the Shoshoni National Forest west of Cody. The blaze, spotted Friday by an airplane patrol, grew through Blackwater Creek region along the North Fork of the Shoshoni River.
Congress adjourned and Representative James F O'Connor of Livingston Montana wrote to the President inviting a Montana visit this summer. He urged that Montanans be grateful and appreciative and that the stay be pleasant for all.
Alberta government to enact six month debt moratorium with an order in council prepared by Premier Eberhart. Cabinet will meet Monday to approve and could extend if needed. Details yet undisclosed.
Domei News Agency reports great powers may propose simultaneous withdrawal by Chinese and Japanese forces at Shanghai. Japan risks rejecting the plan as Premier Konoye insists war must be fought to a finish. Britain’s peace push is described as quiescent after failure to secure a withdrawal formula.
Martin John Martinson, 35, formerly with the Montana Standard mailing department, was found dead in a San Francisco hotel room late yesterday. A United Press dispatch reports police said his throat was slashed, suggesting foul play, though no razor blade was found in the room. He was born October 18, 1901 in Norway. Senator Gerald Nye Republican North Dakota flew from Chicago to Billings then drove with his wife and two sons to Yellowstone National Park. The party planned a brief stay in the park after Congress adjourned so Nye could spend time with his family who had vacationed there.
James W. Currie 19 of 204 Fast Elm Street and Mrs. Edward Charette of Stockton Calif are hospitalized with severe injuries after their vehicles collided at Harrison Avenue and Rowe Road last night. Currie may have vertebrae fractures and cuts behind the ear. Mrs. Currie has a back injury and a badly injured right arm. Police say Currie’s car clipped Charette’s as she entered Harrison Avenue from Rowe Road, then hit two gas pumps at Richfield service station, injuring an attendant lightly. Carrie rushed to St James hospital by Thomas Shanley 1145 West Anthony Street and officers followed with Mrs. Charette. Both cars heavily damaged.
Long Island Sound body examined by Police Sergeant Dennis W. Cavanaugh with Dr. Robert Knauff and FBI agent T. E. Myers was ruled not to be Mrs. Alice McDonnell Parsons. Teeth analysis rejected the claim, and officials have not determined if her disappearance involves kidnapping death or murder. The body was found two miles northwest of Little Bell light and eight miles south of New London by a coast guard patrol boat.
A shifting Congress adjourned after eight months with large Democratic majorities fractured by dissension. Conservative Democrats resisted the President's liberal program, allying with Republicans at times, signaling further party struggles and a battle for control of the 1940 presidential nomination and platform.

Washington observers report President Roosevelt may veto the new sugar control bill that would spend 50 million dollars to aid producers and alter the domestic market after the quota system ends. Hawaii and Puerto Rico refined sugar import limits face a year end expiration, sparking debate among supporters and lawmakers.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies in Montana with cooler conditions. Sunday affects the western portion while Monday brings a dip in temperatures to the eastern region.
James Fe. Woodard, president of Metals Bank and Trust, is named Montana unit chairman for the New York World's Fair 1939. He will act as liaison between the fair corporation and 100 Montana leaders to organize the state display and oversee state affairs for the $125 million exposition.
