Posse kills suspect in Avon slaying after barn standoff
AVON U P authorities said Wilbur C Cook 61 a rancher from Avon was shot and killed Monday after he holed up in a barn and fired on a 12 man posse. The deadly confrontation followed the ambush slayings of Homer Garren 36 of Butte and Melvin McGraff 58 of Avon. Sheriff Ed Darrow ordered tear gas and the posse fired, with Cook dying about 10:30 am. Garren and McGraff were not on his property at the time of the shooting.

Zemljak fatally injured in tavern fight in Butte
Fred Zemljak 24 a Butte amateur boxer was fatally hurt in a tavern fight at Silver King Tavern 317 East Park early Tuesday. He died at Butte Community Memorial Hospital after a city ambulance rush at about 12 30 a m. James Oliver Fitzgerald 22 of 400 East Park is held in connection with the case.
