A gray sedan sped by on Stony Island Avenue as Robert Pitts Jr. walked his three children in a wagon. A gunman shot two year old Bobby Pitts through the head. Bobby died later at South Chicago hospital. Police lack leads and suspect drunken hoodlums showing off.

The Butte area saw temperatures rise after a weekend drop with a high of 81. The forecaster noted the barometer remained high and steady and predicted it may get even warmer today.
A massive forest fire in Plumas National Forest near Portola sweeps through the area as 7000 men and wildlife flee. Two men are believed burned to death and about 60 missing after 14 hours. Deserters say two others were left behind in Popular Canyon, now a glowing inferno. Names of the trapped not learned yet.
A 100 acre forest fire on the Continental Divide southwest of Gold Creek Lake in the Deer Lodge area expands at high elevations 8500 to 9000 feet. R T Ferguson says access is from the Gold Creek side amid rocky terrain and rock slides as Charles Joy leads a 25 man crew toward the blaze.
Two men James Mann and Rolfe Dern were arrested after 70 gallons of moonshine whisky were seized from a Chrysler on East Broadway near Wyoming Street. Agents charged them with evading liquor tax, bonds set at $500 each, and the car plus the liquor were confiscated and the alcohol moved away and destroyed.
