McGrath seeks repeal of net proceeds tax to curb levies

Butte City Pool Delayed To Post Labor Day Repairs

Butte's Stodden Park municipal pool will not open this year due to remaining cracks in the pool base. City Recreation Director Bob Rowling says cement setting and pool filling take time, with opening possible after Labor Day. Ford asks for mandate debate at GOP convention

President Ford challenged Jimmy Carter to a face to face debate as he began his Republican presidential bid in Kansas City. Ford pressed for real issues while Carter accepted the nomination amid a clash with Ronald Reagan and noted ally Senator Robert Dole.

Butte city attorney Bob McCarthy ruled the council action illegal for skipping required public hearings when appeals are filed. Zoning Board Chairman Bob Earhart warned the move could amount to spot zoning and resignation talk swirled after aldermen granted James Williams an appeal.

Rod Cooney dies at 60 in Butte food broker legacy

Rod Cooney 60 of 2929 Burke Butte died Thursday in a local hospital. Son of former Gov Frank Cooney he led Cooney Food Brokerage and served on the State Highway Commission. Born March 23 1916 in Missoula he attended University of Montana and served in the Army Air Corps in World War II.

Robin Carlson doubles up at Madison County Fair horse events

Twin Bridges rider Robin Carlson swept the 4-H horse division earning grand champion horse grand champion 3-year-old horse and reserve champion showmanship. Butte Patrolman Recaptures Escaped Prisioner Near Butte

Kenneth Barker, 49, an inmate who fled the Montana State Prison five days earlier, was recaptured Thursday afternoon about 34 miles from the prison. Warden Roger Crist said Officer Zeiler recognized Barker from mug photos and Barker, still in prison attire, was brought back to the facility. Barker was serving five years for passing a bad check in Beaverhead County.
