The floor debate centers on adding a so called bread tax, with threats to block the bill unless the added amount is charged to the Treasury rather than processors. Rep Maston O Neil proposes allowing sale or lease of cotton allotments across counties if unclaimed in 45 days, replacing a prior rule requiring two thirds cotton growers approval.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP The ambitious 3 120 000 mile Gemini 5 mission was postponed due to storms and spacecraft fuel and telemetry problems. Officials said the next attempt could not be sooner than Saturday. Astronauts L Gordon Cooper Jr and Charles Conrad Jr endured over two hours in the capsule awaiting liftoff.
U S Marines reported over 600 Viet Cong killed in the Van Tuong peninsula engagement, with 552 body count plus 50 prisoners in Marine custody. The air sea assault by a regimental landing force was called very successful by Maj Gen Lewis W Walt.
Robert Henningsen 45, vice president and manager of Christie Furniture Co. at 20 W. Broadway, died early this morning at St. James Community Hospital after a gunshot wound to the chest. He had been in extreme critical condition since Thursday. Roy Sanders 74, a retired Butte machinist, was charged with second degree assault and awaits psychiatric evaluation after the Aug. 6 incident. Coroner will consult with county attorney on inquest. Body lies at Wayrynen Funeral Home.
Emmons 59 a former Democratic state representative and labor union official from Anaconda was tapped by Gov. Tim Babcock to head the Department of Labor and Industry. He will start Sept. 1 in a $7,500 yearly post, replacing Maurice Jones who resigned in June. Emmons, an eight term Deer Lodge County legislator, said he will run the office nonpartisan and urged legislation to make the department more meaningful to labor and management.
The Senate voted 61 to 29 to authorize 1.65 billion dollars for a second year of the war on poverty under Johnson. An administration crackdown blocked Republican efforts to weaken the program. The House had approved 1.9 billion for anti poverty efforts, 400 million more than requested.
A Billings man Arthur Moller, 56, and Seattle woman Mrs Peter Sobota, about 58, were killed in a head-on collision about 10 miles east of Terry. Montana Highway Patrol identified the victims and noted the toll of 159 highway fatalities for the year, four below last year, with Roy Pratt, 77, of Craig added for July 18 injuries.
Charles R. Lee, 34, wounded in a blast that ripped a hole in his car rear outside his home, declares from St James Community Hospital that he suspects the attacker. He recalls threats over anti stamp legislation and vows not to be silenced or made a slave. Lee’s wife and four children were asleep as the explosion occurred.
Postmaster General John A. Gronouski arrives in Butte this afternoon after more than 500 tickets sold for a Saturday luncheon at Columbia Gardens honoring the official visit. He comes from San Diego by private jet with aide Ira Kapenstein, a first official visit to Butte since Farley era.
The City Council zoning commission chaired by J. D. Flynn will convene at 7 30 tonight in the council chambers to hear public views on zoning uses and boundaries. Members include Alderman Terry W. Kelly cochairman William Ring Jack Wulf Councilman Nick Sayatovich and attorney John L. Peterson.
