Butte tax mills to reach record high for 1976 77

Assessor George McGrath predicts total mill levies for Butte residents will range from 302 to 310 mills in 1976 77 across city county state and school districts. He notes a 22.89 mill rise for School District 1 and about five more mills for Silver Bow County while city levies drop 0.7 mill. Valuations, needed to fix totals, should be set by month end amid some uncertain figures from state levies totaling 9.50 mills last year.

Montana High Court restricts judges over grand juries

The Montana Supreme Court in a 3 to 2 decision limits district court judges authority over grand juries. The ruling answers questions from District Judge Gordon Bennett overseeing the workers compensation grand jury in Helena. Justice John C. Harrison wrote the majority ruling with noted dissents.

Prostitution Bust Nets Two Women in Butte

Silver Bow County deputies arrested two women, ages 25 and 28, on prostitution charges after raiding two uptown houses about a half-block apart. They were booked at the county jail, posted $100 bonds, and released minutes later pending misdemeanor charges in Butte justice court. Sheriff Pat Hagel said the raids were conducted with tight security to prevent word of the operation.

Ford may adopt provocation strategy in Carter race

President Ford's advisers weigh a provocation plan against Jimmy Carter with John Connally in mind to ridicule and trap the Democratic nominee. North Korea kills two U S officers in Panmunjom clash

North Korean soldiers armed with axes and metal pikes killed Capt. Arthur G. Bonifas and 1st Lt. Mark T. Barrett in Panmunjom amid a tree trimming dispute. Four other Americans and five South Koreans wounded. Ford and Kissinger condemned the killings. U N command called the act unprovoked murder.

Butte Council Tentatively Funds Bus Service Subsidy

Butte City Council approved using 5000 from Model Cities funds to subsidize insurance costs for Butte Bus Lines for one year to keep city buses running while plans for an Urban Transportation District proceed. The offer hinges on securing a contract and timely spending before Sept. 30.
