Car Thief Receives Indefinite Federal Term for Dyer Act

Harold Dean Halseth, 20, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge W D Murray to an indefinite term in a federal institution under the Dyer Act. He pleaded guilty to transporting a stolen automobile from Portland Oregon to Bozeman where seized. As a youth offender he faces imprisonment, treatment and supervision.

Judge Learned Hand dies at 89 apostle of liberty passes away

Judge Learned Hand, revered in American legal history as the apostle of liberty under the law, died in St. Luke's Hospital at 89 after a long federal bench career. He retired in 1951 as chief judge of the Second Circuit and authored about 2000 opinions. He was praised by Supreme Court jurists and noted for his influential 1950 ruling upholding conspiracy convictions of 11 Communist leaders.

Two Auto Collisions Injured From Butte

Six people were hospitalized after two separate auto crashes in Butte on Friday night. A head on collision at the East Park Street overpass near the Berkeley Pit sent four to the hospital with injuries not listed as critical. Passengers included Jackie M. Yadao a 30 year old from 142 Cherry with facial cuts and a leg injury Pauline Dennehy 16 of 405 Virginia with extensive head injuries Gerald Bugni 22 of 12 with injuries. Highway Patrolman Herb Slack led the investigation noting Yadao's car crossed the lane into an oncoming Jeep. Witnesses said the Jeep was lifted into the air and pushed back about 20 feet. the Jeep rolled onto its side and the driver was thrown forward. The crash hurled both cars into a concrete railing causing a 30 foot section to teeter on the edge of a 40 foot drop. Both cars were badly damaged. The Jeep occupants included Bugni and another occupant reported in uncertain condition.

In a collision near Harrison and later an additional near head on crash in the 1700 block, several pedestrians and drivers were treated at Community. Mrs. Freda Halvorson 45 sustained lacerations and possible shoulder fracture with good condition. Mrs. Jewel Perkovich about 40 suffered head injuries also listed as in good condition. Ten-year-old Robert P. Yadao escaped injury as sole passenger.

Montana Forecast Weekend Showers With Warm Temperatures

The Montana east region expects scattered thundershowers Saturday and Sunday with highs of 85 to 95 Saturday night lows 50 to 65 and Sunday highs 85 to 100. The western region sees fair skies with isolated thundershowers mainly in mountains, highs 88 to 98 each day and Saturday night lows 45 to 55. Maximums and minimums refer to 1 hour readings ending at 5 p.m. Friday.

60 More Forest Firefighters Hired in Butte

A crew of 60 additional firefighters was recruited in Butte to fight the Sleeping Child blaze on the Deer Lodge National Forest. The team was sent to the Lake Abundance campsite near Philipsburg for mop‑up operations as the Idaho-Montana fire enters the late stage. The Montana State Employment Service notes over 700 workers have rotated through the Butte area since the fire began last week in July. George Kore announced the mop‑up phase underway.

Butte Woman Is Given Probation After Embezzlement Guilty

Federal Judge W D Murray sentenced Katherine A Kane 42 of Butte to two years in prison but suspended the term and placed her on probation for three years after she pleaded guilty to embezzling 2650 from Metals Bank Trust Co where she had worked seven years. Authorities say restoration of the funds was made and the case became federal because the bank is part of the Federal Reserve System and FDIC insured.

Young lifeguard saves boy three times in pond

London AP Roger Kenny aged 14 vows to teach Robert Hoy aged 6 to swim after saving him from drowning in a neighborhood pond three times over two years. Kenny remains determined to impart swimming skills.

Deer Lodge Fair Opens With Parade Feasts and Arena Action

Deer Lodge hosts a four day tri county fair with a parade, beef barbecue, livestock exhibits, and a full arena lineup. The program includes horse shows, barrel racing, stock pony races, hurdles, and a world rodeo phase starting at 8 pm with finals Sunday.

Horse Show Set In Twin Bridges

An open two day Madison County Fair horse show in Twin Bridges features halter classes Saturday morning, races in the afternoon, and a cow cutting event. Judges Hugh Peltz and Bob Miller. A fireworks display Saturday night and a Sunday 11 o clock parade (MST) head the weekend attraction drawing crowds from Butte and Dillon.

Weekend fairs and rodeo events fill tri county area

A busy weekend list includes a four day tri county fair at Powell County near Deer Lodge with a Saturday parade and horse shows, the Madison County Fair at Twin Bridges with a morning parade and exhibits, Silver Bowmen of Butte hosting the third annual field tournament at Thompson Park, and the Boulder Rodeo a Sunday benefit for crippled children at the State Training School. Also Yellowstone Pageant events at Madison Junction with Mission 66 open houses, plus Go Kart saves in Anaconda.
