Butte Soldier Earns Silver Star for Nazi Air Attack Defense
Pfc. Alvin R. Nicholls of Butte received the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the European theater during February to April 1945. He remained in his scout vehicle under heavy fire and drove off attacking planes with a machinegun. The citation notes his courage in France Luxembourg and Germany and his unit helped liberate Buchenwald. Nicholls graduated from Butte High School in 1943 and enlisted August 23 1943. His brother Robert E. Nicholls serves in the South Pacific.

United Nations sanctions aid for refugees in exile
