Deer Lodge Fair Moves Into Full Swing With Rodeo Events

Deer Lodge hosts the Tri-County Family Day at the Powell County fairgrounds with free admission and eight oclock gates. Highlights include an O Mok See under lights, a Cowboy and Indian drill, junior riders from Missoula and Helena, and a featuring parade and barbecue. The two day event includes a RCA world championship rodeo starting Saturday night, with finals Sunday.

AAUW Mont. Meeting Opens in Butte With Leaders Visiting

Mrs. R. D. Shipley of Miles City presided at the opening session of the Montana AAUW state meeting in Butte. Banquet and business meetings followed as Friday and Saturday programs listed leaders from Helena Billings Great Falls and Seattle with sessions at First Presbyterian Church and a luncheon closing.

In eastern Montana showers near eastern mountains Friday morning with scattered thunderstorms east and south Friday afternoon and night, then partly cloudy. northwest cooler Friday, southeast late Friday, highs 70 to 90, lows 45 to 55. A small International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local began picketing Kennecott Copper’s Bingham Canyon open pit in Salt Lake City area with about 2,300 workers affected. The company indicated partial operation under 25 percent as talks continue after a Wednesday night strike call.

Terms for Two Who Chained Girls

Milton Emery and his wife Marian were sentenced to six months in jail for inhumane treatment of their daughter Jennie 17 but the terms were suspended. They pleaded guilty and admitted chaining Jennie and her sister to furniture to prevent them from leaving. The judge ordered corrective actions at 1039 W Granite and regular reporting to the county attorney.

Petersen, 79, longtime Butte merchant, dies

Clarence H. Petersen, 79, a longtime Butte merchant and active member of the LDS Church, died Thursday. Born March 14, 1882, in Salt Lake City, he moved to Butte in 1911 and worked as head butcher before opening Petersen's Standard Market on Main Street. He operated the market until 1956 when he joined another venture.

A Thursday afternoon blaze at Naranche Memorial Stadium destroyed the press box and hundreds of bleacher seats on the north side. Superintendent surveys damage will wait on insurance adjusters. Fire discovered about 1 20 p.m. may have started from debris fires along the field. Custodian Terry Kelly led crews on the south side as smoke erupted in the north bleachers. Firemen used nine hose lines to quench the blaze that consumed a press box and power conduits.
