Francis Gary Powers testified before the Soviet Supreme Court that he flew the U2 mission under forced orders and was unaware of the intelligence aspects. He expressed remorse for the incident and described his role as a pilot caught in a political crisis.
Despite the arrest of two F&S Contracting Co truck drivers, the firm said it hopes to keep haulage across the Butte Meaderville road. The men were charged with violating weight limits. officials consider enforcing speed and traffic rules on county roads. The case may affect operations at the Anaconda Co. open pit east of the highway.
Two Anaconda Co. electricians were injured when a diesel truck skidded into a pole at the Berkeley Pit. William F. Shields 32 remained hospitalized with fractures while Alan R. Garrett 22 was treated and released after head lacerations.
Dr. R. H. Dyer, 78, former three term Sheridan mayor and founder of Butte's Murray Clinic, died at home after a brief illness. A physician since 1911, he helped advance local health services, highway funding, and served as Northern Pacific surgeon and public health officer. He is survived by a daughter, two grandsons, two brothers, three sisters, and numerous relatives.
A 46-year-old man identified as Collins Dawkins was rescued from a closed railroad boxcar in Pocatello Idaho after an apparent 10 day journey. He was dehydrated and starving and hospitalized in poor condition. Union Pacific said the train left Miami Florida about 10 days earlier and passed through Kansas City Missouri en route to Idaho. Dawkins likely entered the empty car in Miami and could not open it from inside, with authorities estimating a 3000 mile trip.

Butte's dog issue moves to impounding stray animals as councilors vote unanimously to reject leash requirements due to funding gaps. Mayor Vern Griffith ordered immediate hiring of one or two dogcatchers to enforce impounding unlicensed strays amid citizen pressure for a leash law. A prior hearing noted the surrounding metropolitan area would hinder law effectiveness.
The partly dismembered body of 11 year old Avril Terry was found in the Ohio River downstream from Boonville Indiana hours after Emmett Hashfield 53 was charged with first degree serious incident in the girl's disappearance Hashfield claimed he dumped the body and led police to a dump site before making statements as investigators noted injuries on the girl’s body and a confrontation with her father.
In Vientiane dissident Maj. Gen. Nosavan leads royalist forces toward civil war against Souvanna Phouma in a power struggle that splinters Laos. Reports say Nosavan’s rebels mass at the Souvanakkhet base 185 miles south while leaflets accuse Kong Le of risking a Communist threat.
An explosion at the Indian Head Maryland Navy propellant plant near the Potomac River killed one worker and injured 14 others. The 14 injured were in a building about 1000 feet from the blast and those injuries were described as minor.
