A severe downpour and gale force winds in England cause many boats to run overdue and contribute to a toll of fourteen fatalities. The storm disrupts travel and maritime activity as authorities assess the continuing danger and shelter-in-place orders are issued along coastlines.
Furious gales and heavy rain cause the worst floods in 40 years in Selkirk shire and across Britain. Aboard small craft many boats are overdue while crops and buildings suffer in outlying villages. One casualty is Col. C. H. (Continued on Page 2, Col. 3.).
The Lindberghs Charles A. and Anne wait at Petropavlovsk for storms to lift before flying 897 miles to Nemuro on Hokkaido. Reports say Nemuro has two empty hotel rooms reserved for them as 89 reporters and 27 news photographers crowd in.
The long awaited plan to relocate Butte city offices from City Hall to the county courthouse will be fully discussed this afternoon in a 2 o clock meeting. Representatives of the city and the board of county commissioners will review months of negotiations sparked by Mayor Archie McTaggart after he took office last May. The move aims to replace crowded, dirty and poorly ventilated quarters with space at the courthouse, but has been postponed due to budget and other fiscal year concerns.
The twenty-fourth biennial state convention of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and its Ladies Auxiliary opened in Butte for a two day session with a joint session at Knights of Columbus hall and a Nine Mile picnic supper. Delegates wore emerald badges and enjoyed games at Columbia gardens as mayor M taggart greeted attendees. Officers to be elected in the afternoon session.

Helena August 17 In spite of drought Montana state fair halls were crowded with livestock and mineral displays and 15 county exhibits. Four‑H entrants totaled ninety five boys and girls with many animals to be sold later. New School and Club building dedicated by Governor Erickson, donors and leaders honored. The day featured horse racing vaudeville fireworks and a lively evening program. Pari‑mutuel betting returns rose significantly.
Mayor James J. Walker of New York on a rest cure trip to Prague took part in Schlackenberg's 600th anniversary celebration. He visited the Bohemian town and drank several steins of anniversary beer brewed extra strong for the occasion.
