In Gormanston Ireland a 75 year old man and hundreds of Catholics flee sectarian violence. The camp houses civilians and refugees with 150 people by Saturday morning including many children. The British military mobilizes to quell riots in Belfast and Londonderry.
In Belfast and Londonderry about 600 and 350 people, mostly Catholics and Protestants, fought and arson spread over five days. Police reported about 20 gasoline bombs aimed at pubs and homes with limited damage. Britain mobilized more troops, including 100 24th Infantry Brigade soldiers to be flown in. Ulster authorities threaten indefinite internment. Chichester-Clark seeks emergency powers. Death toll rises to eight, with 500+ injured. See Ireland page for details.
Irish Americans plan actions nationwide to help Northern Ireland Catholics. Boston group gears up a Sunday rally to fund guns and ammunition for Ulster Catholics and backs a boycott of British products. About 15 picketers protest at BOAC New York offices. Organizers claim 60 men with arms sent to Ireland. A UN vigil and UN intervention call follow. Hibernians pledge up to $1 million for relief if needed.
Lawmakers criticized press practices during the Montana Press Association 84th convention. Rep William S Goan denounced editors for selective printing while Sen Tom Selstad faulted a Great Falls Tribune piece. Rep E W Bill Christiansen praised improvements in legislative coverage.
More than 500 young Montanans registered for American Legion Boys State at Western Montana College. Director Ted Hazelbaker noted late registrants would push the total to about 530. The gathering includes youths from across Montana, welcomed by Western president Dr James E Short and Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce president W B Gallaher.
The 74th annual convention ended with a banquet at the Finlen Hotel in Butte where George OConnor of Montana Power Co. gave the principal speech. E E MacGilvra spoke next and Robert Poore served as toast master as about 175 attendees gathered. Seven of eight officers were reelected. Ellen Townsend of Highwood was newly named third vice president.
The 1959 Hebgen Dam area earthquake in southwestern Montana killed 28 people and buried 19 under about 80 million tons of rock after an 11 37 p.m. August 17 quake. The Madison River was dammed and canyon avalanches roared through trapping campers and causing mass evacuations.
Ten years earlier the quake sent a 200 foot high slide across the canyon 400 feet to the opposite side blocking the Madison River with a dam that would take years to build. Campers survived dazed and bleeding as avalanches tore clothing and exits were blocked. Water rose and fell in Hebgen Reservoir as shocks continued for hours.
Hurricane Camille nears Florida with top winds near 155 to 160 mph and eyes the Keys and Panhandle. Dr. Robert H. Simpson notes Camille is like the 1935 storm with a small area of extreme fury.
