The State Board of Health executive says the Rocky Mountain Phosphates plant in Garrison should be cleaned up or shut down if it cannot operate without harming health and welfare. Local residents testified of respiratory problems and environmental damage while company president Bryce Rhodes defended cleanup efforts and cooperation.

Major forest fires burn across region with 13 blazes reported
Six large fires plus several smaller blazes have scorched the area, with 19 000 plus gallons of water and tens of acres burned. Tourists trapped reports surfaced as crews battled the flames. One man William J. Eneas was flown to Missoula for treatment after falling ill at Hot Springs. Smokejumper Frank Solf was hospitalized after an arm injury at Tom Beal Ridge. By Wednesday 24 jumpers assisted fires as 205 personnel fought Crooked Fork No 1 near Lolo Pass threatening 160 acres. Three Die in Traffic Accident Near Alzada Montana
A one car crash on U S Highway 212 near Alzada left three dead and two injured. The deceased are Elmer Lindquist 70 Ruth Lindquist 61 and grandson Gary Hill 8 all of Funk Nebraska Mosby Montana. Injured are Sandra Hill 10 and Linda Hill 12 both of Mosby. State Patrolman Ray Brander said the car driven by Mrs Lindquist left the road struck a boulder and flew 58 feet.

Fairbanks flood begins to ebb inching toward relief
Flood waters receded in Fairbanks Alaska as up to 14 000 refugees were housed in evacuation centers. Officials estimated damage at 150 to 200 million dollars with three dead and thousands displaced. the river may fall further but rebuilding plans require time.
