Forty miles south of Ennis a massive landslide triggered by a magnitude quake on August 17 1959 buried the Madison River Canyon killing twenty eight people. Memorial services are planned at 11 am atop the earthslide to honor the deceased.
Francis Gary Powers faces a military tribunal in Moscow on his 31st birthday with the Soviet prosecution pledging to convict the entire U S foreign policy. Barbara Powers and Powers’ parents attend as American spectators amid global publicity surrounding the downing of the U2 over Soviet territory.
Two state prison inmates fled from Prison Ranch No 1 near Deer Lodge and remain at large as sheriffs in all Montana counties are alerted. Donald Lee Smith 23 and Gerald Morrison 21, both of Butte, were last seen about 9 40 p m Monday and were up for parole next month. They were not carrying belongings. Smith is 5 6, 140 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes, serving a four year Lewis and Clark County sentence for petty larceny with a prior conviction. Morrison is 5 11, 130 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, sentenced in Yellowstone County in August 1959 for burglary.
Wives of two brothers living in the Sister Cities each gave birth to their third son Tuesday in separate Butte hospitals. John Michael Moodry arrived to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Moodry of 1925 Thornton and Frederick Moodry to Mr. and Mrs. Frederick P. Moodry of 701 Hickory Anaconga.
Milton Boyd of the NLRB from Seattle will hear the seven week old Mountain States Telephone strike Friday at 9 a.m. in the Federal Building. The FMCS mediation meeting in the Finlen Hotel produced no progress. The dispute centers on five traffic department workers deemed supervisors by the company, a point the union contests.
Two Fort Lewis soldiers Earl Friede and Rudy De Hoyos are jailed after police say they siphoned gas from a Kitto's Transfer and Storage Co. truck behind T and B Texaco Service at 1001 E Front. They admitted leaving Fort Lewis Saturday without leave, stealing a 1958 Edsel in Salem Oregon Sunday, driving it to Butte, and arriving Tuesday. FBI took over the case and both men remain in city jail.
Judges have chosen winners in Butte's 32nd annual flower show though a record entry of over 400 participants halted a full listings update Tuesday night. Winners will be announced Wednesday as the Crystal Room at the Anaconda Employees Club hosts the final day. Hours Wednesday run 10 a.m. to 9 30 p.m.
At the U N Disarmament Commission opening the Soviet Union rejected the U S plan to close weapons material plants one by one. U S delegation chief Henry Cabot Lodge proposed turning over 66000 pounds of weapons grade uranium to peaceful use or shutting major enrichment plants under international inspection if the Soviets won t agree. Kuznetsov called the proposals old and unworthy of serious consideration as Khrushchev urged broad disarmament talks at the General Assembly opening Sept 20.
Dr. Richard E. McArdle, head of the Forest Service, told Butte officials that Montana can profit from its woods through expanded recreation and tourism. He outlined a 12 year plan to develop timber, water, grazing and other resources and urged attracting industry rather than shipping wood out of state. He noted a pulp mill goal and visited a Montana mill under construction before heading to the Madison Valley earthquake memorials and Kaniksu National Forest in Idaho. He was joined by regional foresters from Missoula.
The Bureau of Reclamation will invite bids this week on a railroad relocation project on the East Bench unit near Dillon. About 14 miles of Union Pacific track will be moved around a reservoir created by Clark Canyon Dam, plus construction of a steel bridge. existing track will be submerged after dam completion.
Air Force Captain Joseph Kittinger leapt from a balloon over the New Mexico desert reaching nearly 103000 feet. He set multiple records in the space probe program and later spoke at a Los Angeles news conference after his dramatic jump.
Montana east and west regions expect mostly cloudy conditions with scattered showers in the southwest mountains and extreme east. Temperatures range from mid 60s to low 80s with highs near 80 and lows around 40 to 55 in eastern areas and 38 to 48 in western zones.
A snowstorm dumped up to nine inches in Yellowstone Park, with 2 9 inch depths at Canyon Lake Old Faithful and Yellowstone Lake, while Dunraven Pass and Red Lodge Cooke Highway faced closures. Roads mostly open though. The event follows a severe earthquake anniversary in the region.
Graeme Thorne eight year old son of a lottery winner was found dead in brush seven miles north of Sydney. He had been kidnapped on July 7 and died within 24 hours of the ransom call. Police did not determine the cause of death. Rewards totaling thirty two thousand dollars were offered.
In Johannesburg a rockfall trapped miners with at least 13 unaccounted for after the incident on Tuesday. Rescue teams brought 22 miners to the surface alive.
