Washington reports very slow progress toward a settlement on the 11.2 billion lend-lease aid to the Soviet Union. Key points include inventories of materials received, amounts expended or destroyed, and materials Russia still holds. Talks began April 30 after initial policy changes with Moscow.
A full house watched three days of rodeo in Butte with cow hands earning over 2850 dollars in prizes. Cowboys battled fast calf roping and bulldogging while ring pickup men saved riders from danger and specialty acts entertained the capacity audience.
Joseph F. LaFountain 32 from Lewistown died at the Midland Empire fair rodeo in Billings after a drone threw him and kicked him. Coroner Howard C. Smith cited a skull fracture. La Fountain, WWII veteran, rode the north west circuit about 15 years and was among the oldest amateurs in regional shows.
Bewitch trained by Calumet Farm led a 1 10 2/5 time for six furlongs to earn her eighth straight victory in the $78,050 Washington Park futurity. Citation and Free America finished second and third as Calumet Farm also campaigned the entry.
In a BBC radio address Winston Churchill argues Britain must reject Labour’s plan for wartime style labor conscription and state control of industry. He warns totalitarian compulsion would lead to bankruptcy hunger and dispersal or death for many. He does not mention U.S. aid.
Mrs. Alice Davey, 87, of 58 Missoula Avenue, was struck by a car at Park and Main Saturday evening. The driver, William F. Chapman, 1114 Maryland Avenue, was taken into custody and released on own recognition. Mrs. Davey was taken to St James hospital with multiple head and facial lacerations and was listed in fair condition.
Fire Dispatcher Fite said three new fires, all under a quarter acre, were reported Saturday in the Bitter Root, Clearwater and Nez Perce National forests. He warned travelers that fire danger is mounting as rains ended.
West of the divide Montana shows partly cloudy skies with scattered showers to the east and west. Sunday highs range 70 to 80 across regions with a 24 hour high near 82 at Butte area and 70 to 80 elsewhere.
The 20 nation Inter-American conference unanimously adopts Uruguay’s mediation proposal for the Paraguayan civil war and Argentina presses for swift economic aid and hemispheric cooperation. Argentine Foreign Minister Bramuglia urges defense of world peace and intra American economic support while some delegates oppose timing ahead of Bogota talks. Paraguay's government announced rebels fleeing after repulsed attacks on Asuncion were crossing into Argentina. The communique said rebels laid down arms south of the capital, as loyalist troops mopped up remaining pockets. Dispatches quoted rebels claiming continued actions in Asuncion suburbs.
Thirty six Kiwanis sponsored Sunshine campers leave the camp tracing a record of growth and food. They gained an average eight pounds per child reaching 288 pounds total while consuming 1008 tablespoons of cod liver oil and 200 pounds of potatoes weekly. The farewell program featured shadow puppetry by the Junior League of Butte and a four Turkey feast to cap the event.
The Butte Country club hosts its revived annual Pro-Amateur tournament August 30 to September 1 drawing Montana amateurs and pros along with Northwest stars. About $1,000 in prizes and merchandises will lure top golfers to the three day 54 hole best ball event with team pairings set by handicap and draw.
Butte high school's 1947 class shows high college intent with 93 graduates seeking transcriptions to Montana and out of state institutions. Of 305 total graduates, 79 aim for Montana schools, 14 for other states, with many continuing at Montana State University and Montana State College as final lists are detailed.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council approved by 13 to 3 a draft agreement linking the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development with the UN as a specialized agency. Russia and Norway voted no with Czechoslovakia and New Zealand abstaining as Debates extended into a night session.
Dillon Aug 16 Youthful citizens of the American Legion Boys State will visit Virginia City and Butte on Sunday, traveling from the Montana State Normal college campus. A 9 30 a m caravan will depart Dillon for a luncheon at the Anaconda Copper Mining company Employes club in Butte and a 1 p m departure for Virginia City where State Senator Charlies A Bovey will greet them.
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru warns that rioting must stop and that the government will spare no one who acts violently in the new Hindu dominion of India. He speaks after calls for peace from both Indian and Pakistan authorities on independence day, amid deadly clashes in Punjab and Bengal.
Continental Oil company announces start of an $8.5 million refinery at Billings Montana with 7500 barrel daily capacity. W H Ferguson says contract for construction signed with Jones and Laughlin Supply of Tulsa Oklahoma. It will be the eighth plant of the company.
