Roy G. King confessed to firing the fatal shot that killed Lewis J. Palmer on July 20 in Colorado Springs. Glenda King, 18, also confessed, detailing the night Palmer was killed. Authorities said the revolver found in Lizzie Jackson’s home is the murder weapon, and the case appeared solved as the sheriff handed dictations to the district attorney for prosecution. Only King and his daughter remain in custody as King’s brothers were released after questioning.
Boy Scouts of the Butte area closed Camp Lowlands after its most successful season with a large court of honor around the campfire. Fifty scouts received awards of various degrees as Rev. Charles E. A major alert is Midget Creek fire 30 miles north of Avery Idaho covering over 12000 acres with 200 men and 160 mules involved. Continuous coverage and updates expected as crews rush to containment.
Nearly 350 members and delegates from Montana cities attend the biennial state convention of the Ancient Order of Hibernians opening in Helena. Rt Reverend George J. Finnigan and Rt Reverend V. O’Hara participate in church and social programs. Walter J. Sewell presides as mayor Archie McTaggart gives opening welcome at the Knights of Columbus building. The convention begins with high mass at St. Joseph’s church and ends with a banquet at the Finlen hotel Tuesday.
Burlington Vermont August 16 Captain Frank Hawks holder of many American airplane speed records was fined 500 by American customs for landing illegally in the United States after a flight from Montreal. Officials said they would recommend waiving the assessment as Hawks did not intend to violate the law.
The forecast for Montana calls for a generally fair day with continued warm temperatures. Highs expected to linger in the warm range as the weather remains settled across the state.
A licenseless automobile crashed into the famed Old Town Pump at the Arizona Avenue intersection, ending its 25 year service to horses and thirsty boys. The fountain, once popular with nags and area youths, is wiped out as auto traffic supplants horse use in the business district.
Washington Aug 16 The Wickersham commission again divided in not fully explaining crime causes. It delivered to President Hoover a two volume 859 page report on the causes of crime. The studies blame unemployment depression and bad environment among other factors.
The Carnegie foundation report finds seniors in Pennsylvania colleges less knowledgeable than expected, with forgetting eroding much of their prior learning before graduation. Ten thousand students were surveyed, showing freshmen often retain sharper understanding in many subjects.
Joseph Kaiser and Allen Glassburn were testing a ram airplane at De Kalb county airport when the craft sharply banked at about 1,000 feet. Kaiser's life belt broke, he tumbled to his death, and the airplane spun out of control, smashing to the ground and killing Glassburn. The incident occurred near De Kalb, Illinois.
Arrangements are completed for the grand chapter of the Eastern Star meeting in Butte next Thursday Friday and Saturday chaired by Mrs Mabel Culpertson. Thursday focuses on social activities registration and the grand masters and grand matrons ball at the Temple ballroom. Friday and Saturday feature important business sessions in the Broadway theater with music speeches and social events.
