Soviet forces drive into the German fortification belt 25 miles east of Bryansk after a 72 hour battle. The Russian offensive threatens the German left wing and signals gains on Bryansk Spas Demensk and Kharkov fronts as Kharkov falls to pressure.
In Quebec Churchill returns to the wartime conference after a three day visit with President Roosevelt at Hyde Park. British and American and Canadian chiefs of staff have been meeting to discuss war conduct with broader Allied plans likely focusing on the Mediterranean and Western Europe. The Prime Minister and Roosevelt plan further discussions in Washington this week as rehearsals for the Quebec talks wind down.
Montanans have purchased more than 60 million dollars in war bonds. William H. Bartley of the state war finance committee reported that series E bonds total 59,581,392.75 while series F and G amount to 433,446. July sales fell short of the state quota, with August set at 3,000,000 and the third war loan drive running September 9 to 30 aiming at 35,000,000. County leaders include A. T. Hibbard, R. B. Richardson, Art Nelson, Tom Moodie, and Mrs. J. H. Morrow. Counties over the top in July include Broadwater, Carter, Custer, Dawson, Deer Lodge, Garfield, Hill, Lake, Liberty, Lincoln, McCone, Madison, Musselshell, Prairie, Ravalli, Sanders, Sweet Grass, and Valley.
Five girls were born to Mr and Mrs Carlos Salazar in Ciudad Valles yesterday. Three infants died shortly after birth, leaving two survivors among the quintuplets.

London reports a Rome radio warning Italians not to expect Rome to be spared further bombing despite Badoglio declaring Rome an open city. The broadcast said relief from air attack requires both belligerents to agree and all terms met, with bilateral confirmation from two sides. Madrid dispatches cited correspondents saying Rome bombing should end all illusions about continuing the war.
Alfred E. Smith known as the happy warrior campaigns again not in politics. He will lead 150,000 volunteers in a door to door solicitation to raise 17 million dollars for the U S O United Seamen Service and other armed forces support groups. He is named chairman of the home front mobilization division of the New York committee of the national war fund.

Mrs. Ida M. Crowley a Montana pioneer born in Minnesota died suddenly Sunday at her Lewistown home. She arrived in 1868 via prairie schooner and was mother of Butte man Daniel E. Crowley. Funeral services planned in Lewistown with burial beside her late husband.
Swiss press dispatches reported Milan’s railroad street car telegraph and telephone systems paralyzed by British aerial bombs in a Saturday raid. Thousands fled toward the Swiss frontier as public morale collapsed and news was limited to leaflets promising further raids.
Navy communique No 458 announced the loss or presumed loss of six U S warships including the submarine Pickerel and destroyer Maddox. Also sunk were PC 496 Redwing Sentinel Plymouth, with crews notified. totals bring 110 ships sunk or lost since the war began, among them 11 submarines and 30 destroyers.
Cairo reports U.S. Liberator bombers attacked the Wiener Neustadt Messerschmitt facility in Austria. The communique says airframe works and assembly plants received heavy hits, starting fires and explosions, with bombs bursting over hangars and production areas.
A Butte couple and three children were injured when their car overturned on U S highway 10 near Crackerville. Joseph Jaksha and his wife died. children John 4 and Mary 3 were seriously injured. Billy 9 shaken up. Joseph Jr 16 and Frank 15 remained home. The wreck was found by Ernest Brisbin and others, and the victims were taken to Warm Springs and Anaconda hospitals. Coroner Longfellow ordered an investigation as the car was demolished in a ditch. John remained in critical condition with chest injuries.
Early Monday events report John Jaksha age 4 remained unconscious and in extremely critical condition at St. Ann hospital in Anaconda after an incident.
Joseph Jaksha Jr and Frank Jaksha 16 and 15 remain at home after a deadly accident kills their parents. Joseph declines his newspaper route to work and support the family. The Jaksha family, Yugoslav natives, had long resided in Butte. The bodies are at Sherman and Reed funeral home with funeral arrangements pending.
Representative A. Willis Robertson warns that raising basic corporate income tax rates could curb business willingness to invest in war production. He notes profit incentives drive output and jobs for returning soldiers rely on maintaining reasonable private enterprise profits amid broader plans to fund the war effort.
