Germany and Italy report a definite peace plan to settle the Danzig dispute. Japan refuses to join the Europe pact and will focus its activities toward the Orient while Prime Minister in cabinet decision confines Nipponese actions.
Tokyo sources say Japan will keep major activity in the Far East for now, with August 8 decisions by Premier Hiranuma and ministers shaping limits on Europe. A possible Italy and Germany alliance is discussed as part of a broader anti communist pact. In Tientsin a U S widow Mary Frances Richard was slapped by a Japanese sentry after seeking entry to the blockaded French concession and was detained an hour.
A Butte mother, Annie B. Penrose, reunited with her daughter in Louisville Kentucky after 34 years. Penrose learned of the daughter’s letter from her home in Louisville and rushed to the city, where a long search ended in an immediate reunion. The daughter had been taken to Louisville in 1905 and placed in the Home of the Innocents.
Berlin reports an ominous quiet in government circles over Danzig and Pomorze as Nazi rhetoric continues a strong press campaign. Officials hint a bloodless Danzig solution may emerge, while Britain’s Chamberlain notes a possible improvement in tense relations as observers compare the mood to Munich.

Butte residents will face a 1939 40 tax bill totaling about 10 cents on the dollar of taxable property value. The combined levy for county school state and city taxes will be 103.3175 mills, up about five mills from 1938 39. The county levy totals 26.4675 mills with allocations for general fund poor fund and other items, plus a 1.5 mill garbage collection assessment in certain districts.
Two national Girl Scout training courses are in session at Camp Castle Rock drawing enrollees from seven states. Local director Miss Capitola J. Hill announced the programs for leaders and for camp directors. Instructors include Miss Lucille Skewes, Miss Gladys Johnson, and Mrs. Mary Jane Littlefield.
Wayne Lehti of Butte was elected great sachem of the Improved Order of Red Men at the state convention in Anaconda. Philipsburg tentatively set as 1940 meeting site. The delegates adopted a resolution for a 10 year immigration halt or until unemployment falls. Shoshone tribe of Butte won the Tom Doberly flag for 85 percent membership gain.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians and auxiliary wrapped up their biennial gathering with officer elections and a sightseeing trip. Walter N. Riley of Anaconda named state president of the AOH while Miss Catherine Harrington of Butte became state president of the auxiliary. Montreal to host the 1941 national convention. Delegates from Butte Anaconda and Great Falls attended. high mass opened the meeting at St Lawrence church. A banquet at Chequamegon cafe capped the event described as highly successful.
Berlin reports say Chancellor Hitler urged advisers to settle the Danzig dispute within two weeks ahead of the September 2 Nazi party congress. Talks with Burckhardt and Ribentrop with Ciano emphasized a peaceful solution, but warned the Rome Berlin axis cannot reverse course if no accord is reached.
Walter D. Cline of Texas, imperial potentate of the Mystic Shrine, will visit Montana this weekend. He arrives Friday in Billings for an official Al Bedoo temple visit, then travels Saturday to Old Faithful Inn for a noon reception with Butte Shriners from Bagdad temple, followed by a Cooke City highway trip into Yellowstone National Park.
A gridiron rebellion grows against President Roosevelt plan to move Thanksgiving from November 30 to November 23. Authorities and business leaders back the idea to aid commerce while football circles face disrupted schedules and possible two Thanksgiving days. Senator Bridges led opposition noting surprise at the change. Lew Hahn of the National Retail Dry Goods Association supported the move.
Federal officers assumed command of the inquiry into the derailment of the City of San Francisco near Reno. The wreck killed 33 and left 109 injured after a rail was moved, with investigators seeking the man or men responsible.
Commissioner F C Harrington announced a new WPA wage schedule raising the national average by about 2.5 dollars monthly to roughly 55 50, effective September 1. The plan increases southern state wages while northern scales stay similar with minor cuts, and lowers earnings in Silver Bow county but raises eastern Montana wages.
Rep Hamilton Fish of New York warned, we are drifting toward war and action must be taken immediately. He arrived for the interparliamentary union congress and feared August 20 as a possible outbreak date as he urged a peace resolution to the major powers.
The Montana Police Protective association announces the annual convention agenda led by Officer Earl Holman of the Butte Police Social Club. The event begins 11 am Thursday at the Butte brewery with speeches and luncheon, while registration and HQ are at the Finlen hotel. Dan Regam will preside over business sessions, and a large turnout of officers with spouses is expected, totaling about 200 people.
