American casualties mount in Shanghai as Chinese central government forces attack 9 000 Japanese sailors in the international settlement and French concession. Bombs hit central districts near Cathay hotel and Palace hotel while Western residents and Chinese civilians suffer heavy losses.
Three groups of mercy flyers search northeastern Alaska for the missing Soviet polar airplane. Russian airmen depart Moscow to join the hunt while American and Alaskan pilots and Russian observers scan from Fairbanks to the Arctic Ocean. Early radio hints suggested the craft was safe, but operations avoid ice risks. The Soviet government orders eight planes and two icebreakers into the search.
James Mattern the American globe flyer planned a non stop Oakland to Fairbanks flight to aid missing Soviet polar flyers. He would stop at Oakland to refuel and install de icing on his $125000 plane before the long run north. Weather will determine if the Fairbanks leg is completed within 18 hours of Oakland departure.
Streetcar operations in Butte for fifty years will be suspended soon as buses take over under applications by Anaconda Copper Mining Co and the new Butte City Lines. Public Service Commission hearings set for August 30 in Butte address abandonment and initiation to run similar routes and fares. The power shortage, needed for mines, drives the move as streams will be restored next year, with 1,000 workers affected already.
Canadian airmen searched for a United Air Transport Amphibian missing with three aboard after takeoff from Pouce Coupe Friday en route to Dawson. Pilot Leonard Waagen had not reported in as dense smoke and fog hampered two search planes, with hopes he pressed a lakes stop rather than crash in the mountains.
Ray Ruhle, a Butte businessman, was badly burned in Oakland on August 7 and remains in serious condition. He has had a slight pneumonia attack that is hindering recovery. Mrs. Ruhle and their children are with him at Peralta Hospital in Oakland.
County Surveyor Jack Healy says 3.2 miles of the Divide road west of the Butte Dillon highway is half finished. Oil work should finish in 10 days as crews continue improvements toward the Beaverhead Silver Bow bridge over the Big Hole river. Healy notes the road is the busiest section of Silver Bow's secondary roads and is under inspection by the U S Bureau of Public Roads with reports to the state highway commission.
Samuel Elmore a 55 year old WPA employee confessed after long interrogation to assaulting and strangling four year old Joan Kuleba at a public beach on Staten Island. He said he found the body in an abandoned shack the next day weighing it down with bricks and concrete.
Newark New Jersey August 14 U P The state Alcoholic Beverage Commissioner D Frederick Burnett ruled that a Ashbury Park bar must remove a sign reading Get Lit at the Lighthouse Burnett warned that allowing the sign would invite many similar phrases such as Get Soused at Souza s Stewed at Stewarts or Pie Eyed at Pianola s and so on
Bankhead signals a rush to adjournment and admits the administration wage and hour bill cannot pass this session. The issue heads toward impasse in the rules committee as Congress nears a likely end around August 24 or 25. The Chamber of Commerce urged scrapping the bill and backing state action with federal support.

Two Cheyenne men Oliver Eagle Feather and Clyde Red Neck died after a quarrel at the Sheridan rodeo area near Busby. Edna Red Neck, Clyde’s widow, was wounded but survived as Red Neck shot her then killed Eagle Feather and later killed himself. The dispute centered on Edna's appearance in dances at the rodeo. Mrs Red Neck was hospitalized but expected to recover.
Senate judiciary committee members forecast a Monday vote to approve Senator Black of Alabama to the Supreme Court despite telegraphed protests and delay demands. Support from labor groups and AFL president William Green urged swift confirmation amid public opposition notes.

R. R. Rouse a 44 year old from Butte was reported wounded by machine gun fire in Shanghai. Earlier city directories show a Richard Rouse in 1908 1910 and 1923 at different addresses. United Press dispatch says he was wounded in the left knee and arm while riding in a car. Russian companion Walter Turpin was killed. wife child Chinese nurse and chauffeur escaped injury.
After a three hour cabinet session Tokyo says new developments in China, including Shanghai, require firm resolute measures. The aim is to press the Nanking government and Kuomintang to reconsider positions while Japan seeks protection of its citizens and broader cooperation with Manchukuo. Naval reports accuse Chinese actions as increasingly arrogant and call for possible evacuation of Chinese nationals. Voluntary war chest donations in Japan reach about 2.5 million dollars.
