Montana Supreme Court orders three district court judges to bring to trial within 60 days the five defendants indicted by a grand jury on workers compensation felony charges. The ruling, unanimous, allows possible delays if a judge proves impossibility, with trials to start by mid October.
Congress overrode Ford's veto on the mineral leasing bill raising federal coal royalties from 5 cents a ton to 12 percent of selling price. Montana could gain about 5700000 in extra revenue from the royalties plus taxes, lifting coal costs by over 1 a ton and residential power bills by about 56 cents monthly.

FPC judge says Gulf Oil and Texas Eastern Transmission may have conspired to withhold gas to raise prices. The ruling cites Gulf not delivering required volumes under an interstate certificate and urges a Justice Department investigation. Both firms deny any conspiracy as records show Gulf delivering available gas.
Representative Wayne L. Hays withdrew from re election amid a sex scandal sparked by his affair with Elizabeth Ray. He cited health reasons and harassment by The Washington Post as factors and said he would step down at the end of his term.
John P. Dunphy, chief of the FBI exhibits section, admitted converting FBI property to his own use in U.S. District Court. The $100 or less value plea marked the first criminal charge against a bureau employee tied to his work. He resigned, faces a $1,000 fine, and sentencing was deferred as prosecutors pursued broader investigations with immunity offers for other agents.
In West Yellowstone residents rejected the proposal to disincorporate by an unofficial tally of 332 to 63. Voter turnout reached about 60 percent of 653 registered voters, with two ballots disqualified. Officials note some deadwood on rolls and the town population is around 800. Harold Baier of the study commission commented on a perceived local machine influence.

Almost everybody but Lois Mae Peterson thought she robbed the First National Bank of Anoka on March 23. Her husband and employer identified her from a picture and clothing evidence pointed to the 49 year old St Paul woman as the robber. After her arrest a robber used the same method to loot another bank. The Anoka attorney said they could have convicted her.
