Forrest Ballard 26 of Jefferson Valley was critically wounded by rifle fire at his Cardwell basin ranch on August 1. He underwent surgery after a slug injured his intestines and later showed signs of recovery before complications worsened. Neighbor Don Emigh 65 was held on assault charges in Whitehall justice court as Ballard recovered.
