Three Chinese war planes bombed the Japanese cruiser Idzumo at Shanghai's northern band in a surprise attack. The ship appeared undamaged as nearby docks were splintered and anti aircraft fire rattled into the sky. Witnesses reported shrapnel and flames near the cruiser as Japanese crews prepared for further raids.
R. R. Rouse of Butte Montana was wounded in the left knee and arm by machine gun fire while riding through the Sino Japanese war zone in Shanghai. Walter Turpin, a Russian, was killed. Rouse's wife child and Chinese nurse unharmed. chauffeur uninjured.
Alaskan air crews prepare to search for six Russian flyers led by Sigismund Levaneffsky after their four motor transport, crossing the North Pole, reported overdue en route to Oakland. Weather and fuel details uncertain. emergency rations aboard and dawn search planned if unreported.
Japanese troops entered the southern entrance of Nankow pass in North China on Saturday Aug 14 meeting little resistance from central government forces. The clash highlights ongoing combat as Japanese advances continue in the region.
On August 13 at Nankow Pass in North China the Chinese 89th, 84th and 145th divisions entrenched in craggy recesses and blockhouses as Japanese columns moved forward with nine inch howitzers and big field guns. A correspondent watched from a hill within sight of the Great Wall as officers warned of grave danger and troops refused to yield.

Frank Aguilar, 34, was executed in Colorado's gas chamber for the axe murder of 15 year old Dorothy Crain of Pueblo. An onlooker, Ed Hamilton, 55, collapsed and died of a heart attack during the procedure. Aguilar died at 8 10 p m mountain time eight minutes after entry.
In California Mohave district 70 miles east of Bakersfield, a gold assay of 1500 dollars per ton follows radium and helium discoveries on desert claims. Mrs. Josie Bishop reports radium and helium on Red Rock Canyon land, while Whitmore Mines Corp finds gold four miles from Mojave amid ongoing government helium controls in Amarillo. Geologists note 265 per ton silver would cover mining costs.
President Roosevelt vetoed a War Department flood control and conservation bill and proposed a comprehensive national plan. He argued the measure centralizes planning in the War Department and lacks prior presidential review for budgetary and conservation policy. His regional planning proposal remains before Congress.
