Son receives Silver Star for father's Vietnam heroism

Edward J. Hagl Jr. accepts medals in Bozeman as his father Boatswain's Mate J. C. Hagl posthumously receives the Silver Star and Purple Heart for heroism in Vietnam. The elder Hagl died in action after guiding a mine field to open a channel for landings. Seaman Robert W. Cawley also died. Grace Hagl and family witness the ceremony at the Butte Naval Reserve Center.

Three Forks Man Killed in Family Crash

Three people died in separate Montana crashes Sunday raising the 1968 toll to 161. Rodney Tocci 12 of Three Forks was killed instantly when his brother Larry’s car collided with a Willow Creek vehicle. Larry Tocci and Robert Cooper were hospitalized in Bozeman. Joseph Fraser 53 of St. Regis died when his car left the road near St. Regis and fell into the river in fog. Charles Richardson 30 of Oromocto Canada died when his car overturned on U S 2 near Nashua with passenger Charles McCutcheon 19 of Lion Head Ont. hospitalized in Glasgow.

Hughes open to veep job says he would accept if offered

Gov Richard J Hughes indicated on a Sunday telecast that he would accept a vice presidential offer if Humphrey secures the Democratic nomination. He stressed he is not a candidate and plans to return to his law office next year, though he acknowledged serving if asked.

Jewelry and cash stolen from Cole's car after stop at service station

James W. Cole reported more than 1,480 dollars in cash and jewelry stolen from his car Sunday evening after leaving Davies and Paxson Phillips 66 Service Station at 935 S. Montana. Missing items include two watches a diamond ring two pearl rings and another ring. Investigators from the sheriff's office are probing the case.

Jackie Robinson backs Democrats over Nixon in presidential race

Jackie Robinson said he would support the Democratic nominee against Richard Nixon, calling Nixon part of a racist ticket. Robinson, a former Dodger and Hall of Famer, resigned as an aide to Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and criticized Nixon's appeal to the South. He noted Thurmond influenced Agnew's selection and recalled past Republican support.
