The Soviet Union’s third cosmonaut Major Andrian Nikolayev aged 32 remains in orbit into a second day amid fanfare and Khrushchev’s praise. Reports suggest planned days in space and possibly a two-man mission to test spacecraft communications as a step toward moon travel.
Larry Taylor a 15 year old sophomore and his 56 year old art mentor Toivo Aho are painting a wildlife mural on a concrete and brick wall at 118 Covert in Butte. The pair attract visitors to their outdoor studio on the city's upper East Side.
A man fled after his 1958 pickup lost its motor and plunged 30 feet down an embankment on Highway 10 near Rocker, four miles west of Butte. Highway Patrolman Madlena said the vehicle tried to pass a car, hit the shoulder, rode it several hundred feet, then the motor dropped out and the truck slid down the embankment dragging the engine. A witness said the passing car briefly moved ahead then returned to aid the pickup driver.

Washington reports James E. Webb head of NASA and the State Department sent best wishes to cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev ahead of his orbital flight. They also stated the U S plans no nuclear tests that would affect his mission and voiced hopes for his safe return.
Thousands visit the Madison Canyon area near Yellowstone to view the quake created lake and Quake Lake memorial. The 1959 disaster formed a dam on the Madison River, left 28 dead, and reshaped a famed trout stream now restocked and popular for fishing, with a plaque honoring victims.
