Two young couples were murdered and their bodies burned in a case that led to the detention of two brothers. Police report they are being held as primary suspects awaiting further investigation and possible charges. Local authorities declined to release additional details pending formal filings.
Autopsy reveals a grim struggle on a lonely road near Ann Arbor. Two 16 year old youths, Harry Lore of Ypsilanti and Thomas Wheatley, were killed after being shot and struck. their car later used as a funeral pyre. University of Michigan pathologists describe gunshot wounds and predeath injuries as investigators piece together whether the crime was robbery or an assault on the girls involved.
Reports from Wall Street claim acceptance of a proposal to sell copper to Germany on long-term credits. In copper circles the idea has been viewed favorably, with discussions likely to continue in subsequent pages.

Perry chief geologist for the state bureau of mines and geology returned to Butte after six weeks studying groundwater in eastern Fergus western Petroleum and parts of Valley and Phillips counties. He reports many localities with flowing wells within 500 feet of the surface and notes ranchers have hauled water from areas where wells were not drilled. The bureau will focus this summer on regions where successful wells are expected.
The report notes a NYSE upturn driven by short covering and volume above norms as Germany negotiates a ten year debt extension at 3 percent and suspends reparations payments under Hoover era moratorium. Paris signals Laval may visit Berlin, suggesting a goodwill step toward improved Franco German ties and potential world stability.
William H. Woodin, board chairman of American Locomotive, said resumed equipment buys by railroads depend on a favorable ICC decision on higher freight rates. The Associated Press reports Captain Lisban dro Garay was rescued about 36 hours after his plane went down over the Atlantic. The rescue renews hope for Parker Cramer and Oliver Pacquette, missing over the North Sea during a survey leg toward Copenhagen. Both incidents share similarities, with Garay found far from the initial departure points in New York and Tegucigalpa while Cramer and Pacquette were last seen on water in the same general period.
For Montana, Wednesday and Thursday will be generally fair with cooler conditions on Wednesday. The forecast calls for pleasant days with a dip in temperatures as the front passes, keeping skies mostly clear and temperatures moderate.
Robert Raynolds, 29, from Georgetown Conn, earns $10,000 after 14 years of rejection slips. His novel Brothers In the West is selected as the Harper prize book for 1931. Glenda King, companion of Lewis J. Palmer’s slayer, signed an oath accusing Floyd Spears of killing Palmer. She reaffirmed the charge after previously withholding it. Authorities seek evidence to counter Spears alibi claiming he was at a dance from 9:25 p.m. July 20, until after midnight, while his parents say he was at a park concert until 10.
Lewiston Idaho August 11 William F Schmadeka 71 who led settlers to Mount Idaho built an emergency fort and guarded the area during the Nez Perce war of 1877 died at a local hospital today. His courage saved settlers and deterred attacks as Nez Perce warriors prowled nearby.
In Kalispell Aug 11 special report says rum-runners attacked Al len Gunderson near death and fled in his car after tying him up at the airport. Gunderson found by his wife at dawn and gave a statement to Sheriff Ripke as authorities in western Montana launch a major manhunt. The pair claimed they only wanted to borrow the car.
Miles City August 11. American Legion posts were urged by National Commander Ralph T. O Neill to seek jobs for needy veterans. Speaking to the Montana department convention he called for immediate construction of public works by city, state and federal governments as a fundamental relief program amid rising lawlessness from loss of faith in church, state, law, and home.
The district No 1 school board opened seven bids from Butte fuel firms for coal for school buildings and planned an adjourned meeting Friday to award the contract and decide on the 199 683 23 refunding bond issue. A letter from state land commissioner I M Brandford noted the land commission may bid on the refunding issue.
District Judge Asa Li Duncan called a Missoula County grand jury to investigate assessments and levies in Missoula County and the conduct of officers collecting or spending public funds.
In Cuba on August 11, Gen Francisco Peraza, a noted rebel leader in Pinar Del Rio, was said fatally injured with many rebels near Los Palacios as government planes bombarded the hills. Government and rebel troops clashed in several other regions as the conflict escalated. details on casualties were not yet confirmed.
