In 1969 Butte records a 90 degree day breaking early heat norms. Eileen McNellis, a PBX operator, ventured through hot streets to verify the surprising temperature as downtown gauges showed a 4 degree reading.
A roaring, devastating fire swept the Grand Hotel in Livingston late Sunday night. Dozens of firefighters remained on scene Monday morning as they fought to control the blaze and stop spread to adjacent buildings.
Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins exit the Lunar Receiving Laboratory after 21 days in quarantine. Doctors say no moon germs were found and all 23 related quarantinees were released, with medical monitoring for a year.
President Nguyen Van Thieu nears a cabinet reshuffle and possible advisory council after weeks of behind the scenes moves. Official sources silent while speculation grows in Saigon about broader political support and Thieu's plans, including a potential role for Gen Duong Van Minh.
Dillon residents Mr and Mrs Cliff Henningson learned their son Army 1st Lt Kim Henningson 22 was injured in Vietnam from a North Vietnamese phosphorous grenade. After word reached Washington they phoned Kishine Japan and spoke with him. He is a 1968 West Point graduate who served in Vietnam since June 15. His brother Tad remains at home.
Interstate 90 east from Butte features a perilous seven mile curve section on Homestake Pass where 21 accidents in the past year plus many unreported incidents have left $44 000 in vehicle damage and six injuries. A fatal truck accident is reported and more details follow on page 2.
The forecast calls for continued warmth with a high near 90 and a low around 55. A weather map appears on Page 2 offering regional details and expectations for the day.
CBS would accept a tobacco industry plan to end cigarette advertising at the start of next year if Congress approves. CBS president Dr. Frank Stanton said the move is unfair to networks but would comply. ABC rejected the idea and NBC had no reply at press time.
North Vietnamese forces attacked two Marine bases along the DMZ with mortars rocket grenades and dynamite bombs. Seventeen Marines were killed and 82 wounded as fighting raged across two camps, with one base partly overrun before reinforcements arrived.
