Montana Traffic Toll Rises With 137th Death
In Billings a stalled car was knocked over by a Northwest Freight truck on Montana Highway 3 killing Mrs. Francis Fredrickson, 54, of Great Falls. The Bremers escaped injury as they waited by their stalled vehicle. Montana’s traffic death toll reached 137 this year, up from 102 a year ago. Freddie Goulette, 26, of Ovando died in a crash on Highway 20 near Lincoln. his brother Jesse Goulette remained in critical condition. Funeral services are set for Thursday in Ovando.

Eight Men Parachute Safely From B52 over Candia
Eight Air Force crewmen parachuted from a disabled B52 Stratofortress near Candia New Hampshire. Six were rescued soon after landing while two others including the pilot were found hours later. The aircraft, with no crew aboard, had fallen from 14000 feet and crashed in a remote area of Epping about 15 miles east of Candia. The missing two were identified as 1st Lt Joseph L. Hunt and T Sgt Merril R. Hethorn.

Anaconda Union Talks Resume After Subcommittee Meeting

Fires on Two Sides of Helena Ended With 300 Men At Work
Smoke from grass and timber fires on two sides of Helena rose into the sky as more than 300 firefighters battled blazes near the city. One fire in the Helena National Forest burned 40 acres in 15 minutes and grew to 300 acres with 200 men plus eight bulldozers. A second spot fire east of the original burned 40 acres. By 9 p.m. fire lines surrounded both fires and crews reported the blazes contained with no further spread expected.

Two Firefighters Die Of Burns On Coast
Riverside Calif AP two firemen died Monday of burns suffered when they and 26 others tried to halt a wall of flames near Lake Elsinore. Twenty eight firefighters were trapped Saturday as flames swept tall brush on slopes above the Elsinore resort area. Rusty Brooks 24 a US Forest Service foreman and Ben Slater 31 a district manager from the Cleveland National Forest died in a hospital.
Smokejumpers Battle Small Fire Near Philipsburg
Ten smokejumpers flew from Missoula to a forest fire in heavy timber on Ross Fork of Rock Creek ten miles southwest of Philipsburg. Nine foot crews joined the effort with five more workers recruited locally. Borate drops and supplies were sent in as fire indices peaked near 80, close to the year's high.
