Danzig Nazi leader proclaims hour of liberation near for Poland while Germany vows aid. Foerster denounces Polish threats and hails Hitler promises to free city residents as tensions rise in Europe.
A Miami high school girl was raped and killed by Thomas McBride Cochran a 29 year old talent scout. He confessed and was moved to a secure jail amid mob threats as 200 men gathered outside Boca Raton jail. Frances Ruth Dunn 17 and Jean Bolton 17 were involved and Bolton escaped.
Albert Foerster declared with 100000 onlookers that Hitler’s promise of liberation nears. He blamed Polish threats and pledged to follow Führer orders, while diplomats sighed relief that no new direct action threats were issued. Germany would aid Danzig if Poland attacks continue.
Berlin August 10. The foreign ministers of Germany and Italy prepared to confer as part of ongoing diplomacy reported by United Press. The meeting was noted in Berlin with continuation referenced for further details on page three.
In Oakland California a 72 year old blind woman was found in her home weeping while her 76 year old husband George Nethercott lay dead in another room. Neighbors alerted police after not seeing the couple since Friday. Autopsy shows the husband died of a stomach ulcer. The woman received care and bread and milk deliveries at the door continued.
Western Montana remains short on moisture despite some eastern relief from hot, dry weather. Missoula reports only a trace since August. Kalispell 0.18 inch. Conrad 0.12 inch. Lewistown leads with 1.08 inches, followed by Glendive 0.73 and Fort Peck 0.70. Other totals include Livingston 0.68, Poplar 0.64, Billings 0.58, Helena 0.42, and Great Falls 0.21 inches.
Carl Trauerman announces an invitation to former president Herbert C Hoover to speak at the Mining Association of Montana's fifth annual meeting in Bozeman on August 18 and 19. The event includes three sessions on mining industry problems, especially for small operators, ending with a concluding program. Hoover is also expected to spend time at West Yellow Stone as a guest of W D Thornton.
An industrial survey in Butte will map local work types and employment needs for vocational training in public schools. Coordinator Charles Davis says the study will detail jobs, worker sources, and training needs, with confidential input from industrialists and businessmen.
Henry Wellington Buford 61 retired businessman and stockman native of Madison county died this morning at his ranch home near Ennis after long illness. Funeral services set for Saturday at St Paul Episcopal church Virginia City with Rev. Robert Granger presiding. Interment planned in the local cemetery.
Thomas McBride Cochran, 29, linked to a Florida murder, was arrested in Superior Montana last May after entering with a teen girl. He was brought to Butte then ordered to Denver on impersonation charges. FBI notes show prior probation in Denver begun July 8.
In San Francisco on August 10, 18 year old Margaret Polly Weill was spared a long prison sentence when the judge noted she was under 18 at arrest. Superior Judge Lyle Jacks sentenced her to four years in the Ventura state home for girls, citing juvenile court rules and the proximity to her eighteenth birthday.
Maria Corazon Rafael, born with her heart outside her body under a celluloid bell, grew stronger at 84 hours as she received more milk and doctors monitored her condition. Engineers from General Electric began plans for a specialized incubator as physicians noted her improving appetite.
The Army placed orders with 11 plants for bombers interceptor pursui t planes training craft and engines at $85,978,000. Military officials expect more than 1,500 aircraft with total government cost over $100,000,000. The contracts raise Air Corps procurement to about $192,000,000 since Roosevelt urged expanded air defenses.
President Roosevelt says the Democratic party cannot expect his support for a conservative nominee in 1940. He leaves open whether he will seek the nomination or push a third party effort if the Democrats choose a candidate he deems a tweedle dum.
Harvard historian Professor Samuel E Morison leads a six month expedition to retrace Columbus voyages aboard two ketches Capitana and Mary Otis sailing from Oyster Bay New York around August 15. Morison aims to reestablish Columbus as seaman and clarify routes with crew of 15 men three women financed by Mellon Foundation Carnegie Corporation Milton Fund. He notes the 1502 04 voyage exposed Honduras and North American mainland and opened the Pacific era.
Four forest fires remained out of control in western Oregon and Washington but cooler, humid air slowed spread. The Sadie Mountain fire, about 60 000 acres, showed gains in control as winds dropped. Wolf Creek 30 000 acres and Dutch Canyon 14 000 acres were checked though not controlled. Over 5 000 acres burned in the Columbia forest of western Washington with evacuations of five mountain homes as rain neared coastlines.
Mrs. C. H. Burdick 60 wife of Dr. C. H. Burdick superintendent of the Montana Congregational conference died in a Billings hospital. She had been hospitalized since July 11 after injuries from a Columbus area crash and suffered a heart attack Wednesday night. Death was attributed to a heart ailment. She is survived by her widower, her father, three daughters and three sisters.
President Roosevelt told the Young Democrats convention that he will not actively support a 1940 ticket he calls conservative or lip-service. He warned that nominating such candidates would be a suicide for the old Democratic party and said he would withhold support.
Approximately 335 WPA workers in Silver Bow county must be laid off for at least 30 days before September 1 under new laws. About 400 already have been discharged to be recertified and placed on a 30 day waiting list. State administrator Joseph E. Parker also announced roughly 2,200 more layoffs statewide before the month’s end.
Ancient Order of Hibernians members and their ladies auxiliary will meet in Butte for a two day state convention. The program opens with a high mass at St Lawrence church Walkerville preached by Rev J A Rooney and celebrated by Rev Peter F MacDonald. William Durkin of Anaconda state president will toast master at the banquet at Chequamegon cafe with Rev Father Rooney as principal speaker. Delegates come from Butte Anaconda and Great Falls.
