Helena reports the August all-wheat forecast for Montana at 88.15 million bushels, down about 5 percent from July’s 92.98 million. The drop, blamed on July heat and dryness, reduces expected revenue to roughly 176 million for farmers, with barley also down to about 30 million.
The Agriculture Department reported July gains in crop prospects, with total production at about 103 percent of the 1947-49 base. Corn, rice, and sugar beets improved, while wheat oats barley flaxseed hay tobacco and potatoes fell modestly. Production remains near last year’s record despite planting delays.
Democrats holding a closed door session in Washington agreed to consider income tax cuts when Congress reconvenes in January. Speaker Rayburn and Ways and Means members signaled standby tax relief could be enacted when the budget allows, though the form of cuts was not discussed.

Three year old Eugene Moran, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Moran, ranching near Sidney Montana, was fatally shot Friday from a loaded .22 pistol left in a migrant worker's car. Coroner Homer Gorder said no witnesses and no inquest are planned. He died at a Sidney hospital about four hours later. Survivors include his parents and an older brother.
The House voted 201 to 197 to block a Democratic push for seven government built atomic reactors. It preserved the administration’s private enterprise partnership for electric power and restored 4.2 million dollars for research aid on a Monroe Michigan reactor.
Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Harrington of 1329 Utah will be held Monday. She died in a local hospital after a fall from stairs at home last Tuesday and never regained consciousness. Interment is at Holy Cross Cemetery after a requiem Mass at St. Joseph Church. She was a lifelong Butte resident, married to Joseph Harrington, daughter of Dan and Mary Scannell, and mother to Dannette Lee and Patrick Joseph. She belonged to St. Joseph Church and Monroe PTA. Survived by husband, children, brother Joseph Scannell, and several in-laws and cousins.
In Berlin Khrushchev spoke at a mass rally but waved to empty seats as Leipzig residents and East Berliners largely ignored his visit. He repeated pledges against war, warned of retaliation for satellite attacks, and criticized Western bases in West Germany.
President Eisenhower nominated James H. Smith Jr. to head the International Cooperation Administration succeeding John Hollister who resigned after two and a half years. Smith, a Colorado rancher and former Navy official, served in World War II and later held Navy posts. He operates North Star Ranch near Aspen, Colorado.
In Huron Ohio a baby carriage wheel trapped on railroad tracks led to a speeding mail train collision. The mother Mrs Leonard Ball and two children Ruth Arlene eight weeks and Mary Ann three were struck as the train roared by at about eighty miles per hour. Fireman S J DeFalco reported seeing the mother struggle with the carriage moments before impact.

The House approved by 329 to 58 an 11 percent annual pay raise for about one million federal white collar workers, a figure totaling roughly 530 million dollars yearly. President Eisenhower opposes general federal pay increases, arguing they could fuel inflation. The Senate must act, with a 7 percent alternative already pending.
Tropical storm Bertha moved inland crossing Audrey's path near Cameron Louisiana. Forecaster said the center lay south of Lake Charles with 65 mph winds and a 5 foot tide as warnings remained in effect from Galveston to Vermilion Bay while Cameron faced damaged tents and new homes.
John Maxwell, a 78 year old pioneer prospector, was found slain in his mountain cabin east of Columbia Gardens. Investigators described the gun homicide as a possible target killing with a .38-40 revolver missing from the scene. Coroners noted a beating and a struggle as Maxwell died from a back wound.
House Speaker Rayburn urged acceptance of the Senate civil rights bill but left room for compromise. President Eisenhower opposes the Senate jury trial amendment as undermining federal court power in injunction cases and would veto any such change. House GOP Leader Martin demanded rejection, citing a Department of Justice letter noting jury trials would impede enforcement of civil rights and other federal policies.

Only survivor was Terry Fisher, age 9, taken to Parks Air Force Base hospital with minor injuries. California highway patrol reported a head on collision as a car driven by Lockett crossed the centerline on the highway, killing six people from two families.
