Montana health officials report 57 percent of inspected restaurants had dirty kitchenware and surfaces while 56 percent of self service spots showed food protection gaps. The 296 establishments examined reveal widespread equipment and maintenance issues with actions taken to fix deficiencies.
The Montana Public Employes Association and county commissioners reach a two year agreement by a 52 to 4 vote after a week of walkouts. Deputies receive monthly salaries of 900 for sheriffs staff 770 for courthouse workers 425 for clerks and hospital staff see health insurance and cost of living clauses. The settlement follows mediation by Duane Johnson and faces potential legal action if the strike resumes.
U S District Court in Butte orders the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth to pay 197 301 dollars in back wages under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The payment goes to 252 female technicians and aides previously paid less than male workers. A permanent injunction bars further violations.

Judge LeRoy L. McKinnon will sit August 15 for the defendants, including law partners Francis Burgess and John Prothero, Helena attorney LaVerne Harris, and ex-WCD administrator James J. Carden. The 55 count indictment, the first from the panel active since May 23, follows prior Bottineau politics notes.
The Blackfeet Tribe and attorney Melvin Belli plan a federal damage action next week seeking 10 million punitive and 500000 general damages from Glacier County and local officials over Philip Hirst 22 found dead in Cut Bank jail. A San Francisco autopsy attributed electrocution followed by hanging. Roy represents Hirst's family and Blackfeet Council. calls for a federal grand jury.
Helena AP report says Dr. John M. Opitz of Wisconsin accuses Montana leaders of shabby moves to remove Dr. Phillip D. Pallister as medical director of the Boulder River School and Hospital. Opitz warns he may quit Boulder if Pallister is ousted, praising Pallister for reforms in newborn screening and sterilization policies.
Montana Supreme Court rules that a premarked ballot sticker cannot count as a valid vote in Powell County High School trustee race. The decision overturns a write-in winner and upholds incumbent Browne, citing mandatory ballot marking rules and improper sticker use, with a dissent arguing voter intent.
