A 12000 acre Bitterroot forest fire raged near the Deer Lodge National Forest, with flames rising 200 feet and sparks within 100 yards of the forest. Butte firefighters contained spot fires as crews battled to keep the blaze within the Bitterroot area, aided by aerial observers and fire retardant drops.
More than 100 volunteers had joined by 11 30 o clock Tuesday night at the State Employment Office in Butte to combat forest fires across Western Montana. The first 50 will be sent to the Bitterroot fire in Ravalli County with others assigned elsewhere. Fred Mass led about 80 men to the Lodge forest edge while 20 stayed at Butte headquarters in supervisory roles under Ralph B. Jorgenson.
A Soviet goodwill delegation led by M. P. Gueorgadze, secretary of the Soviet Presidium, arrived in Havana on Tuesday for a six day visit.
Negotiations continue between Butte Plumbers Union No. 41 and shop owners over wage demands. Employers report plumbers absent with no formal strike notice while union officials deny knowledge of any strike. Several projects including the library and airport terminal await resumed plumbing work.

Otto C. Langstadt a longtime Butte and Anaconda businessman died in a local hospital Tuesday at age 88. Born in Wisconsin he moved to Montana around 1900 and ran Western Plumbing and Electrical Co. in Butte and Western Electric Co. in Anaconda until retiring in 1944. Last rites will be conducted Thursday at Richards Funeral Home with entombment in Mountain View Cemetery. He is survived by his widow Louise and several nephews and nieces.
The House approved a five year program authorizing the President to loan 16 destroyers to allied nations to strengthen anti submarine defense. Six ships go to NATO, six to Nationalist China, two to Pakistan, and two for emergency ally use, with five year expiration. Portugal and Spain keep two destroyers each on loan for five years.
Butte City Council faces a special meeting Wednesday at 7 30 p m to hear budget protests. The 1 8 million proposed budget must be adopted by August 14 with a 46 95 mill levy set July 25. Protests focus on garbage fees rising to 12 dollars per dwelling from seven 50, amid council opposition and state examiner pressure to end deficit financing.
Cascade County Railway Employes Association files in U S District Court to halt ICC order permitting Great Northern Railway to discontinue passenger trains Nos 235 and 236 between Butte and Great Falls. A three judge hearing is requested with temporary stay pending permanent injunction.

Spokane visitor Marland Curtis says he was attacked from behind Monday midnight in uptown Butte and robbed of a four and a half carat diamond ring plus $180 in cash. He could not identify the assailant and described only the stolen ring as a square yellow gold setting.

The United States voted against a special United Nations General Assembly session over France and Tunisia and the Bizerte base. Diplomats foresee a majority forming for the session with Argentina and Venezuela voting yes and Hammarskjold polling the remaining nations.
Helena AP. State Board of Examiners may cancel its Wednesday meeting. Executive secretary William M. McEnaney said Secretary of State Frank Murray would not be in Helena, and with little business to transact there may be no meeting. If not held, business will be postponed to next week.
Senate Commerce Committee backs a bill to treat air hijacking as piracy with life imprisonment for flight crimes. House hearings continue on a companion measure amid hijacking incidents. Some provisions allow 20 year minimums and fines up to 10 000 for interfering with crew, with death penalty favored by two representatives for aerial hijacking.
