Homestake Tunnel Replaced by Open Cut in $500000 Project
The Homestake Tunnel 11 miles southeast of Butte on the Northern Pacific Railroad was replaced by a $500000 open cut. Work began May 18 1955 and finished with over 500 feet of new track laid. Train No 25 first passed the cut while Train No 235 was the last to pass the old tunnel. The tunnel opened May 26 1890 and measured 682 feet long at a summit elevation of 6325 feet.

Charles Daly 50 of 1814 A Street, a stationary engineer at Mountain Can mine, was seriously hurt around 9:40 p m Wednesday crossing Harrison Avenue at A Street. The driver, Miss Dee Dwight 18 of 1152 W Silver, said a carload of youths forced her toward the curb causing the crash. Daly suffered a compound fracture, abdominal gash and head injuries. He was taken to Community Memorial Hospital. Dwight was held for accident investigation and released on her recognizance. Daly’s wife witnessed the moment.
