Fires Level Butte Landmarks in Weekend Blazes

Butte saw two major fires over Friday night and Saturday morning destroying the Travonia Mine dry warehouse and the Meaderville Volunteer Fire Dept. station house along with several vacant homes. The Meaderville hall and several Harrison and Main Street homes burned while the Travonia Mine area suffered extensive heat but spared nearby residences. Fire crews, led by Asst. Chief Bernard Morgan, fought both blazes with multiple hoses and pumps, with one injury reported. The incident rekindled memories of the hall’s former role in local Christmas displays and a prior 1934 fire that led to rebuilt facilities. The Travonia Mine had been idle for about 15 years. Cause of both fires remained undetermined as investigators reviewed the scenes.
