Butte Sees Heat Wave With High Readings

The official temperature Wednesday reached 92 degrees in Butte, not the year’s hottest but some locals argued it felt closer to extreme heat. Around 3 p.m. the Metals Bank thermometer measured 104 degrees.

Kennedy Baby Born Prematurely At Boston Hospital

President Kennedy visits his premature son Patrick Bouvier Kennedy at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston after a Caesarean birth at Otis Air Force Base. The infant, diagnosed with idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome, is in an incubator and undergoing X rays and breathing treatments. Baptized Wednesday, the baby is described as stable but doctors warn four days are needed for a final condition assessment.

4 H and FFA Livestock Winners at Butte Show

The 17th annual Butte 4 H and FFA Livestock Show and Sale named Mike Montgomery 15 Gallatin Gateway grand champion fat beef. Shelly Iverson 12 Townsend earned reserve fat beef. Connie Hoffman 14 Sheridan won fat sheep grand championship, and Virginia Capp 11 Whitehall won fat sheep reserve. Ellis Doney 17 Bozeman won fat swine grand championship, Donna Fouts 12 Waterloo earned reserve. Judging contest winners included Milton Dehd Ennis 16 and Mary Montgomery 13 Gallatin Gateway with others. The sale closes Thursday at 1 p m at Montana Livestock Auction Co yards.

Montana Board sets 15 mill high school levy amid dispute

Helena UPI The State Board of Equalization reluctantly set the county high school mill levy at 15 mills rather than 14.8, accusing the Department of Public Instruction led by Harriet Miller of imposing an excessive tax burden. The board warned the 15 mill levy would fund the 1963-64 foundation program but could create a deficiency shortfall, noting revenue estimates differ between agencies.

Weather outlook warm with isolated storms across regions

The forecast calls for mostly fair skies and continued warmth through Friday. East of the divide expects highs 90 to 105 with isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms Thursday and Friday. West of the divide remains warm with highs 88 to 96 and similar shower chances.

UCC Chairman Faces Drunk Driving Charge

Edgar H. Reeder chairman of the Montana Unemployment Compensation Commission was charged with driving while intoxicated. Reeder and attorney Ward A. Shanahan appeared before Justice A. J. White who set 24 hours to enter a plea. He was arrested in his personal car by Helena Police at 2 30 a.m.

Butte Logger Found Dead In Car After Seizure

Everett Puppo a 51 year old logger was found dead in his wrecked automobile on Woodville Hill with a coronary thrombosis listed as the cause. Coroner Andy Aleksich said the death probably was not a traffic fatality and autopsy confirmed a heart attack. Two local boys found the body and police noted the car left the road traveling north and wedged in trees.
