A 6'2 ton explosives laden rig caught fire from a burning building and exploded in Roseburg Oregon early Friday causing heavy damage and injuring scores. Witnesses reported shock waves and extensive destruction across the area. Emergency crews battled flames as authorities investigated the blast origin and potential casualties.
Six people die in a head on collision near Steele North Dakota including an Indiana couple and three Canadians. Emergency crews recovered bodies from wrecked cars as the scene stretched across blocks of the city. Authorities warned tolls could rise with missing persons and debris and property damage was estimated at 10 to 12 million dollars.

President Eisenhower will travel to Europe around August 28 for Allied talks preceding his September 15 summit with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in Washington. Honolulu AP dispatch reports Kauai suffered extensive damage after Hurricane Dot, with flattened buildings and flooded rivers. About 1,000 evacuated including 200 tourists from Coco Palms Lodge as power and communications failed, raising estimated losses beyond a million dollars.

Cape Canaveral reports Explorer VI, a 142 pound miniature lab satellite, launched aboard a Thor A ble rocket at 9 23 a m EST. The satellite reached an elliptical orbit with a high of about 25 950 miles and a low of 152 miles while instruments tested successfully. Data through seven hours indicated stable orbit and functioning instruments with further updates expected after 8 a m EST Saturday.
Marine Lt Col William H Rankin 39 parachuted from a crippled jet at 47000 feet and endured 40 minutes of turbulent rainfall and hail. He suspects such jumps prove a man can survive from 50000 feet if the aircraft stays below sound speed. Rankin is recovering in a Beaufort hospital.
U S District Judge W D Murray presided at a federal court naturalization ceremony admitting 50 people as new US citizens. The largest group naturalized in Butte since WWII, the ceremony highlighted civic duties and rights for the new citizens from multiple countries including Canada Ireland Yugoslavia England Finland Norway Mexico and Germany among others.
AP report from London says Queen Elizabeth II is pregnant with a third child, the firstborn to a reigning British monarch in over a century. Doctors say her health is fine. the baby is due January or February, changing the royal line of succession.
Kalispell 21 year old Dennis Dye dies after a dive into less than five feet of water at Northwest Dam. Deputy Coroner Campbell rules a broken neck as the cause, despite an on site mouth to mouth effort by a physician. Witnesses say Dye attempted a double somersault from a platform at an old logging dam before he vanished beneath the surface and was recovered by Larry O Connell.
John E. Foster known as Jack, 81, longtime Harlowton rancher and former chair of the State Highway Commission, past Montana Wool Growers Association president, died after a heart ailment. Survived by widow Mary, daughter Jeannette Taylor, son John Howard, and several grandchildren. Funeral Monday at 2 p.m. in Harlowton.
A new cream and green four door Chevrolet station wagon with no license plates was stolen from the Murray Motor Co warehouse on East Platinum in Butte. Police were notified Friday.
The Anaconda Reduction Works will close its zinc plant on Monday due to diminishing zinc concentrate tonnage. The six units will be reduced to one at Anaconda, while Great Falls will add a fifth unit to handle concentrates from Anaconda. About 175 workers are employed at Anaconda with similar numbers in vacation relief roles. Some staff may transfer to Great Falls to cover new shifts.
The Silver Bow County Board of Commissioners denied requests from Metals Bank and Trust Co., First National Bank, Miners National Bank, and Security Bank to cut taxes on capital under a 1957 law. Banks challenged the 30 percent assessment. previous 7 percent had been used. Four banks protested, with Metals, First National, Miners, and Security appealing to the state board of equalization, and Miners likely to follow.
