U S Navy Sinks Japanese Cruiser and Two Destroyers

Allied dispatch reports a night action in the Solomons near Vila and Vella gulf in which American forces sank one Japanese cruiser and two destroyers and probably a third destroyer while suffering no losses. The engagement followed an air and sea raid on Rendova and Bairoko, with extensive bombing of Japanese positions and the Munda airstrip in American hands.

Russians Near Kharkov in Speedy Drive

Russian troops advancing behind Kharkov swept through 70 towns and villages, driving toward the city. Moscow said mobile forces reached within 16 miles of Kharkov, with pincer-like offensives from the Chuguev area threatening the Nazi defense.

Girl Scouts Marooned as Bridge Goes Out
