Big Hole Battle Remembered at 100th Anniversary

Carter proposes $34 billion welfare overhaul to push work

President Carter calls Congress to end the welfare system and replace it with a 34 billion plan that shifts able bodied recipients into jobs and offers cash for those who cannot work. Tailings and Creek Work Protect Beaverhead Valley Stream

In Bannack and Grasshopper Creek a legacy tailings pond from old mining threatens fish and farm lands. Mercury and heavy metals leach into the creek, shifting fish populations and contaminating habitat. A $40,000 project with riprapped dikes and a diversion canal will isolate the tailings, funded 75 percent by federal sources and 25 percent by Fish and Game.

Bell System strike averted with 31 percent wage package

A nationwide Bell System strike by 700,000 workers was averted as tentative agreements cover 7.9 percent raise in year one and steps in following years. The deals involve the CWA 500,000 members IBEW 120,000 and TIU 70,000 with Western Electric 50,000 IBEW. AT&T called the pact good and warned bills may rise to cover higher costs.
