Captain M. M. Witherspoon, veteran naval morale officer, visited Butte to highlight Chief Specialist Swan Johnson, once of Butte, who built nine sunlit solariums on the Aleutians. Johnson, known for physio therapy, started in Butte and led a state championship basketball team in 1928. The nine “health shacks” have boosted weary servicemen on Attu and other islands as Witherspoon outlined the impressive project before flying to Billings.

Lightning kills 80 year old circus elephant in Montana
Pittsburgh known as Pitt, an 80 year old elephant from the Cole Brothers circus, was struck by lightning Friday afternoon on the Dillon grounds. The bolt killed Pitt instantly and knocked down three nearby elephants outside the big top. The crowd inside remained unharmed.
