Fragmentary 1930s style notes describe plant stock losses in Italy and Spain as Eight-Power talks emerge. Mentions Hilo process server, neutrality stance, drought impacts, and prominent Democrats meeting against the New Deal with possible Duce support or loyalist backing.
Paris reports eight nations including France Great Britain Germany Russia Italy Belgium the Netherlands and Czechoslovakia drafted an eight power non intervention program to halt aid to the Spanish civil conflict. Portugal’s stance unclear. Germany has not yet formally replied and Italy seeks a neutrality distinction.
Flood waters from a cloudburst inundated eastern Colorado cutting a deep wash at Colorado State hospital. Two cottages deroofed and swept into Fountain river while eight other buildings collapsed. 200 patients evacuated with furniture moved out. Walsenburg also hit with 60 damaged homes and bridges washed away. Romolo Pacheco, 83, died of shock and exposure.
The 43 ton freighter Baldy from San Francisco was towed into West Port Washington by the coast guard after adrift for over five weeks from 600 miles south of Umnak Alaska. Captain Berconc cini and two crewmen had been without water for nearly a week. The engine crankshaft broke June 29 leaving the vessel without radio. The Baldy was last seen June 30 by a Japanese boat and left Port Townsend June 23 after provisioning and minor repairs. The Yaquina sighted her yesterday and Coast Guard relayed the call to West Port where the cutter picked up the disabled ship twenty miles north and seven miles offshore carrying miscellaneous cargo.
A Detroit gathering of prominent former Democrats considers methods to oppose Roosevelt's re election. Sterling E. Edmunds leads the talks with potential anti New Deal ticket plans and efforts to sway votes for Governor Landon. Attendees include James Reed Joseph Ely Bainbridge Colby Daniel Cohalen Henry Breckinridge and others. Edmunds says the group will canvass all possibilities in a closed session.
Dr. W. J. Butler told Gov. Holt that more than half of about 850000 cattle in drought counties have left Montana for feeder markets or better range. Sheep losses follow, with about ten percent of two million sheep shipped. Relief hinges on rain and water conservation as the drought drags on.
At Val Kil cottage Roosevelt hosts intimate friends journalists and photographers after a day of political and relief talks. Mayor La Guardia asks for WPA job quotas up by 500000 to cover all jobless. he speaks as National Conference of Mayors chairman. Senator Lewis GOP control discussions note a Democratic Senate future. Congressman Drewry outlines prospects for Democratic House gains.
Butte plans its second annual field mass at Columbia Gardens on Sunday September 13 announced by Msgr. J. C. Willging of Immaculate Conception church. Holy Name society sponsors with cooperation from all city parishes. Bishop Joseph M. Gilmore of Helena will preach. he led last year’s mass as chancellor of the diocese. About 5,000 attended previously.
Mrs M E Flood of Cascade told searchers who found a female camper today west of Augusta in the Bench mark mountains after she went missing Tuesday noon. The fall prevented her from returning to camp on schedule.
Silver Bow county commissioners adopt a budget of 724 434 93 dollars for operations in the 1936-37 fiscal year. The board will meet Monday to set the annual tax levy to finance the plan. a comparison of records is noted.
Idaho Senator William E. Borah and John D. M. Hamilton, head of the Republican National Committee, plan a meeting tomorrow in either Coeur dAlene Idaho or Spokane Washington. Borah is on a Northern Idaho speaking tour while Hamilton is on a West campaign swing and indicated Borah suggested the interview.
Former President Herbert Hoover and former Vice President Charles Dawes held an informal meeting at Thornton camp just outside Yellowstone Park near West Yellowstone. Hoover hosted a lunch for Dawes and members of Dawes party including Rufus and Henry Dawes Ralph Budd John D. Ames E J Liebold George R Dryden Arch W Shaw Charles S Davis and Col Harry Maud. Also present were E G Bennett Harry M Robinson and Ritchie Hoover's private secretary.
The forecast warns of unsettled conditions across Montana on Friday and Saturday with cooler temperatures expected in the eastern portion on Friday.
Yellowstone park travel for the 1936 season through July 31 shows a 44.3 percent increase over 1935. Total visitors reached 245,488 by July, with gains across all states, the District of Columbia, and 21 foreign countries, compared with 170,050 in 1935. Since June 9 daily entries never slipped below the 1935 corresponding day. Continued on page 11.
Police Judge Louis A Buckley sharply urged quiet in a city hall courtroom. After a brief admonition, an attorney called a witness who immediately disappeared, leaving the room in an apparent bid to avoid testifying. The judge commented that the witness may have acted on the advice given.
Sigis mund Levanevsky and Victor Levchenko, Russian airmen, landed their Vultee monoplane at Sand Point Naval Air Base at 5 30 p m MST en route from California to Russia via Alaska and the Arctic. They averaged 170 mph and reached Seattle ahead of schedule, with plans to depart at 9 a m tomorrow for Juneau, Alaska weather permitting.
Five persons were burned to death when an overturned car caught fire 18 miles southeast of New Orleans. One other was burned possibly fatally. The deceased were Mrs. A F Bernius and three of her relatives plus Mrs Conrad Bernius. The injured include A F Bernius. Witnesses blamed a blowout for the crash.
The Montana state canvassing board released official July 21 primary judge tallies. The report lists district by district results for candidates including Horsky Padbury Andrew Downey Lynch Riley Tyrand McHugh Michaud Arnold Besancon Buren Hershey Mason Patterson Taylor Bennett Blair Kelly Rodgers Berg Leiper Ewing Holt McKenzie Meigs Tools Hattersley McConochie King Rockwood Elwell Demel Derry Goddard Harwood Strong Ford Paul Walton Felt McKinnon Nelstead Purcell Hurley.
State Game Warden Kenneth F. Mac Donald says the Montana Fish and Game commission will consider abandoning the spotted bear game preserve in Flathead and Powell counties at its Red Lodge meeting on Monday.
Red Men of Montana and Pocahontas lodge auxiliary gather in Butte for a biennial two day convention opening at 10 AM in Moose hall East Quartz street. More than 100 visitors expected include a banquet at 8 PM at Lockwood cafe with Walter Beardsley as main speaker. Delegates include Shoshone tribe Wayne Lehui and other officials from Missoula Butte Philipsburg and more.
