Eight cadets among 90 dismissed from West Point for cheating say they were threatened with imprisonment at Leavenworth and loss of citizenship unless they admitted guilt. The Army denies coercion and says courts-martial were refused. Col. Leer promises punishment if threats are proven.
Senator Estes Kefauver defended Truman foreign policy but urged expanding beyond the Atlantic Alliance. He proposed a federation of free nations within the United Nations to deter aggression and strengthen collective security. He criticized Republican critics for opposing aid to Greece and Turkey and for limiting the North Atlantic Pact.
Nine month old Bernida Marie Byrd of Martin City died when an uprooted tree crashed into her parents car on Going to the Sun highway in Glacier National Park near Sprague creek eight miles from the west entrance. The parents and grandmother were injured and the child died en route to Whitefish hospital.

Anaconda residents praised From Copper Camp to Copper City which closed Sunday night before a large Mitchell stadium crowd. The seven episode pageant mixed color, humor and local history with tepees and costumed Indians. Marcus Daly, Horace Garrity, Mrs Daly, and the Morgan Evans family were featured as the town’s origins were discussed. George Wellcome led comedy and a Fourth of July sequence, with scenes of a saloon fight and Indians placing a tepee. William Red Hill aged 38 plummeted over the 162 foot Horseshoe Falls in a crude home made barrel of tire tubes and canvas. Witnesses saw the craft break apart and Hill vanish as search efforts were called off. Local police confirmed death is certain and hill’s family mourned on shore as the barrel remnants were recovered.
A steer plummeted onto a football field in Parada, Portugal, during a game on Aug 5. The animal died and players as well as spectators butchered it on site, with local households providing knives and hatchets. The home team’s butcher led the processing.

Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon was described in good condition but in pain after a horse kicked him in the mouth during a Saturday show at Orkney Springs Virginia. Morse had exhibited two horses at the event where they won blue ribbons and other awards.
