Retail Group Favors Sales Tax Plan
Washington August 5 a spokesman for the National Retail Dry Goods association urged senators to back a 5 percent general sales tax for the duration and six months after. He called it distinctly deflationary and said all economists support the deflationary effect. Taft Senator Vandenberg expressed amazement at Treasury opposition to the levy. Brown among others questioned taxing all necessities, while estimating potential revenue at about 2.5 billion dollars.

Church Elder Is Convicted in Slaying
Oscar L. Albertson, 43, a San Pedro blacksmith and church elder, was convicted of first degree murder for the slaying of John Kmetz, 54, in Los Angeles on August 3.
