Agencies clash over Clark Fork River pollution

Anaconda Co. and union representatives failed to agree in a Butte meeting on waste pollution of the Clark Fork River. Montana Water Pollution Council says the waste is not now a problem for aquatic life, while Fish and Game and council chiefs warn acidity and copper have harmed life along the river from Warm Springs to the lower reaches.

U S Jets Blast Viet Targets In Large Vietnam Raid

U S warplanes launched the largest air assault since February 7 1965 with 49 Navy jets striking military installations at Nha Be south of Saigon. B52s hit a training center and tunnel complex in Long Khanh province while additional missions targeted enemy base camps and fortifications in A Shau and near Da Nang. Thunderchiefs and Phantoms attacked antiaircraft positions as rail yards north of Hanoi were damaged.

Groundbreaking planned for prison research facility in Deer Lodge

Groundbreaking set for Friday August 18 in Deer Lodge for a Hoffman La Roche funded research facility on prison ranch property. Ceremony at 2 pm led by Hoffman La Roche president V D Mattin, with UM Foundation and state boards overseeing the project. Bentley Construction Co. of Butte won a 151000 dollar contract for the lab and a 15 bed ward. The facility will use volunteer inmates and start operations early next year.

Prison escapee sought in Butte

Montana authorities hunted Frank E. Johnson 23 after his escape Friday from a prison ranch near Deer Lodge. Johnson, serving a second armed robbery sentence from Silver Bow County, is 5 feet 8, 150 pounds with brown hair and has relatives in Butte. An all points bulletin urged swift capture.

Inquest Called Into Buttelad Motorbike Death

James Reilly aged 15 died in a Gardens road collision with a car driven by William Head Jr. The coroner Leo Jacobsen ordered an inquest within two weeks after a joint investigation by County Atty Mark Sullivan and staff and Highway Patrolman Don Peterson found no eyewitness. Reilly was the son of Seth and Mrs. Reilly of Columbia Gardens.

Butte Man and Boy Drown in Separate Lake Incidents

A 20 year old Butte man Wayne Hendricks and 12 year old James Mark Loewen drowned Thursday in two Montana lakes. Hendricks, swimming with friends near Homestake Lake southwest of Butte, suffered cramps and(cd) assistance failed as divers later recovered his body. Loewen, a Browning native, rolled from a raft in Georgetown Lake Deer Lodge County and drowned. his body was recovered after search efforts.

Fire rips uptown block on Main Street and nearby blaze

Early Friday a major fire destroyed the Bork Poster Service and several adjacent buildings on Main Street. Firemen escaped serious harm as an east wall collapsed, possibly saving others. Two fires hit Butte with an hour gap, drawing off-duty crews and local youths to assist. Police and Fire Marshal Penitila were alerted.

Draftees clash with antiwar pickets near Chicago induction center

A group of draftees rushed from a Selective Service center west of Chicago’s Loop and attacked about 50 antiwar pickets from CADRE. Signs were torn and literature scattered while several police squads arrived after a five minute melee with minor injuries reported.

Drunken trouble at South Main fire scene leads to arrests

A major South Main fire drew police and curious bystanders. Three intoxication arrests followed, plus a drunk driver who rolled over four fire hoses and two women who fought at the curb. Lea Patrick faced trial after bond forfeiture, Irene Kegley paid a fine, Donna River forfeited her bond, and three drunkenness cases bailed out at five dollars each.
